Yes, I 3d printed a Canon EF to C mount adapter, and it works well. Take a look here (for EF to C mount): https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4497990
There is no Python library (that I am aware of) for Canon lenses, but it's relatively simple to do it in C: https://web.media.mit.edu/~bandy/invariant/move_lens.pdf

I have many timelapses with CHDK. All of the videos on my channel, except for the last one are done with CHDK: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpBheuWzDrqMQOXxWGlXglg
The last one is with a program I wrote for Android (specifically for a Samsung S8) and it has the advantage that it can run for days without an external battery.

I agree that Canon + CHDK produces great results, however there are always other considerations out there, such as how feasible it is. If I'd want a remote, outdoor thing without easy access to electricity, I wouldn't go on the Canon way. Also, I am not sure how well the exposure was set on that Sony sensor, but I think it can do better than that.
