Ricoh CA-3 USB cable release

Hello, I have owned a Canon Ixus 960 IS since 2007 but I only discovered CHDK two days ago thanks to a YouTube video by Todd Dominey about re-creating the Kodak Aerochrome film look digitally. The RAW files and the insanely detailed control possibilities are fantastic. I joined the forum today. This is my first post.

I would like to use a USB cable release to fire the Ixus but I think the Ricoh CA-1 was discontinued a number of years ago. Like the poster I've quoted below, I have discovered that the Ricoh CA-3 is currently available. Has anyone found out whether CHDK supports it since this question was posted back in 2019?

Many thanks for your help.

Hello,
I am a total noob here. I came across CHDK through booksorber.com. I am trying to find a way to scan books, and I understood that I can use either this script https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/Countdown_Intervalometer for a timer or use a remote control. I'd rather not have to build one, but it seems that the one referenced by the manual, Ricoh CA-1, is no longer available to purchase. The CA-2 is unavailable as well. The CA-3 is. Does CHDK support it?

I don't know, but CHDK only has explicit support for CA-1, so what you need to find out is if the CA-3 is backward compatible. The CA-2 reportedly was compatible, see https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=12202.0 for example. Note you may also be able to find 3rd party compatible remotes like the JJC RCA-2 mentioned in that thread.

You might be able to figure if the CA-3 is backward compatible from Ricoh product, by checking if the compatible models overlap.

Alternatively, you can build your own DIY remote with very minimal electronic knowledge https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/USB_Remote
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Thanks for the tip. Yes, I will try to find out about compatibility with older models. Also, I remembered that one of the members in my local camera club has a Ricoh GRIIIx that he brings on week-long hikes. I know he carries a tripod in his backpack, so he just might have the CA-3, in which case I hope I can borrow it for a test :)

I am happy to report that the CA-3 is fully compatible. On my IXUS 960 IS, I set the Switch Type to 'CA-1' in Remote Parameters and it works like a charm, both half-press (you actually just touch the CA-3's button very slightly) and full press for shutter release.

In the end, I had to buy the CA-3 to test it but my friend, the Ricoh GRIIIx owner, said he might buy it from me in case it didn't work with the Ixus. Well, he will have to get his own CA-3 cable release now...  :)
