Thanks again waterwingz.  Bit tricky to see the original file location as I’m on holiday right now, far from my computer. The best I could do before I go home is a SS of the file on the SD card. But I suspect this won’t confirm or disprove your hypothesis.
Just download and tested it. Working on my S100 (once I hacked out the offending version check for resolution that was added recently - that throws an error message that you are not seeing with your more recent version of CHDK).

Try using the Script menu option that says  "Load default param values" in case you've discovered some hitherto unknow bad combination of paramters ? Then try setting the script option for Logging to "Both" or "Screen"
Hi again waterwingz. I found the problem after following your tip to enable logging in the script parameters. I then found a new log file on the card with the crucial error message that Ultimate needs CHDK v1.5 or higher; on checking I found I had v1.4. Installing 1.5.1 seems to have worked in that I see similar messages to your screen shot. I’ll also try your suggestions on getting a single shot once a day.

Enormous thanks - and to caefix for posting suggestions too.

Interesting.  The script checks what CHDK version it is running on and shuts down with an error message if it's less than 1.5.   You also get a warning about that at the top of the script parameters menu.  I'm guessing that you disabled logging prior to running the script (its default is to log to screen and file) and so never saw the error message in between the Started & Finished messages.
