Hi pigeonhill,
     I'm using an SX240HS, but I realized after posting this that I had entered the wrong number into the "override subj. dist." field, by a factor of 10. Yikes!!
I'll try it again with the right number.
   I read your post, but I'm really not fluent enough in the subject to use your suggestions, without a lot more learning, so, I'm going to try waterwingz suggestion and see if that does what I want.

Be aware that manual focus distance settings on most (all?) Powershot models are not really calibrated. Especially on the models without native MF capability.  So don't be surprised if the point of best focus is not exactly at the distance you specify.
