I have both models running the same CHDK version and script, however after a shot the 102B is slower to finish by 1-2 seconds.

I am assuming this is because of the differences in firmware, however i thought i'd ask if it might be related to differences in CHDK.

What specifically takes 1-2 seconds longer?

Generally, I'd expect differences in settings, SD card or scene to be a far more likely cause.

Regarding scene: If you're using auto exposure, one could use a longer shutter speed and possibly trigger dark frame subtraction, or auto ISO could use an ISO setting where additional noise reduction is activated. Auto focus speed can vary widely depending on scene too. More complex scenes or better focus will also create larger files, but in my experience the effect on shooting speed generally isn't very large.

The CHDK ports should be essentially identical, they use identical code gen files and I don't see any obvious sub-specific differences.

AFAIK the only firmware update Canon offered was to 102b (https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=9216.70, https://www.usa.canon.com/support/canon-product-advisories/adv-pss110-fw1020). If there were severe performance problems fixed in 103a, I'd expect them to have done a public update for that too.

after a shot it takes almost no time before the 103a has the chdk overlay back on the display, with the 102b it takes real time i can count before the chdk overlay is back:)

the cams are identically set up with manual focus active, dark frame disabled, fixed iso, no IS, same make and model sd card (with fairly identical >80MB/s write speeds) and so on. set them up side by side to check.
although it is auto exposure they fire simultaneous and on midday when they both fire at 1/500 or identical shorter there shouldn't be a few seconds difference before they are ready again and the chdk overlay is back on screen wouldn't you agree?

the only visible difference is that chdk flashes once off for some ms during the screen chdk overlay with the 103a while the 102b is just a bit longer dark after a shot until it starts the display for a longer period and then the overlay comes up.
since they both use backlight off after 3 seconds, the 102b always lags a few seconds behind in shutting the display off.

and yes, i always wondered why they didn't do the 103a as firmware update, but perhaps there were changes in hardware that make that leap not possible?

First I would try without CHDK to see if there is a noticeable difference in shooting speed.


Then I would backup the 102b SD card and replace all the CHDK files (except firmware) with the files from the 103a card. Copy the whole CHDK folder.
This will make sure all the CHDK settings are identical.


If 102b is still slower I would then swap the SD cards between cameras (updating firmware versions of course).


This should determine if CHDK settings or the SD card itself is the cause.

thank you, however i tried all this, without chdk they seem equally quick in presenting the screen after a shot has been taken. swapping cards, chdk setting and so on didn't change behaviour of the cams.
since reyalp wrote chdk for the s110 is virtually the same, it must be what canon did with soft- or hardware.
 
and although the 102b is a bit more prone to reboot failures, it works for me
alas every time i fail to get a romlog before i pull power to reset the cam and restart the script  :-[
so i'll probably never find out why sometimes it doesn't want to go to record.
