My Canon SX40HS can film 120fps and 240fps videos. Both of these slow motion settings are filmed at low resolution. Is there a way in CHDK to make a script to force HD Slow Motion? I REALLY WANT HD SLOW MOTION! I'VE BEEN WANTING THIS FOR AT LEAST 9 YEARS! I CAN'T TAKE THE LOW RESOLUTION ANYMORE! HELP! :)

The sensor has a resolution of 12.1 Megapixels
Standard Video on the Camera is filmed at 1920x1080.
The Slow Motion option captures video at either 120 fps at 640 x 480 pixels, or 240 fps at 320 x 240 pixels.
I want to record Slow Motion videos in 1920x1080 resolution.

CHDK does not provide any way to capture video at higher frame rates or higher resolution.

In general, I would expect the Canon firmware operates fairly close to the hardware limits. If Canon could have offered HD slo-mo on SX40 when it was released in 2011, it would have been a major competitive advantage, so if it were known how to control these things (which it isn't, as far as I know) the scope for improvement would likely be fairly limited.

There has to be a way to do this. After all, it's the software that controls the Camera. If there's a way to force the onboard computer to grab the frames in high res instead of 640x480, we could get an HD slow motion. Unfortunately, it seems that no one really knows how to hack the SX40HS, because this particular camera, unlike the Canon S3IS, is a dumpster fire. It operates barely since it uses some wacky techniques to work. The Canon SX40HS software is held together by grit, spit, and a whole lot of duct tape. :D

No, there doesn't "have" to be a way. What software can do is limited by processing power, memory bandwidth, sensor readout characteristics and so on.

This is why high frame rate modes are often lower resolution: Binning or skipping pixels can efficiently reduce resolution in the readout process keeps the bandwidth and processing requirements of the remaining steps within hardware limits.

SX40 can do 1920x1080 @ 24 FPS, which is ~50 Mpix/s. 640x480@120 is ~37 Mpix/s. So if you could set arbitrary resolution and frame rate (which we don't know how to do, and may well not be possible), you might reasonably expect the hardware to be able to do something like 640x480@160, or 800x600@100.

Again, if Canon could have sold the SX40 with HD slo-mo, why wouldn't they? It was the top of Canon's product line in that segment at the time, so it wouldn't make much sense to artificially limit it.

Maybe it's not artificially limited. Maybe if we overclock the processor or use the SD Card as extra swappable RAM, we can force it to record higher res slow motion.
