Ok managed to turn off Auto and now when I start the script ny pressing the previewi button I get “ No Image” . Pressing the shutter switches the screen on but I can’t get motion detect to work. Moving the camera about doesn’t trigger the shutter

It seems, that cam was in <Play>, when You started script.

<shoot_half> to open lens, then click <play> to switch to >Alt/Script<,
then <shoot_full> to start script, and again to stop it.  :)

You also can awake cam to <Rec> by pressing <on> button a bit longer.
Then short click <play> and <shoot_full>.

Longer press <play> toggles play/rec, short click enter_alt / exit_alt.

I think you are missing a step here.
1) Power up / start the camera.
2) Press the shutter button to go into regular Canon shooting mode (i.e. the lens extends).
3) Click (short press) the Playback button to enter CHDK <ALT> mode.  You should see the little <ALT> logo on the bottom line of your LCD screen.
4) Press the shutter button to start the script.

No luck. Pressing the shutter in step 2 just takes a photo

If pressing the shutter takes a photo, then the camera is in shooting mode and you can proceed to step 3.

Pressing the preview button brings up the default shortcuts menu and it flickers at high speed in response to any motion. It is definitely trying to take photos but failing. This looks hopeful but there is still a problem.

Do you mean the CHDK help screen shown in https://flic.kr/p/2ndZhri ?
If so, that means you are in alt mode without running the script (step 3 in waterwingz post).  Press the shutter (as if you were going to shoot a picture) to run the script.

The CHDK OSD flickering is normal. It becomes much more obvious when the the Canon user interface is updating frequently, like when face tracking or continuous autofocus is enabled.

After I press the shutter at step 4 , any movement causes the camera to take a single shot

There is a short delay then it takes the photo and shows it on the screen
What is so frustrating is that a few days ago I was trying a few things and it started working. The hack for my camera is still being developed so maybe I’ll have to wait
