After I press the shutter at step 4 , any movement causes the camera to take a single shot
What happens after it takes the shot, and what script are you using?

If it's motion.bas or motion.lua included with CHDK, after it takes a shot, it should return to the motion detection grid display, and shoot again the next time there's motion, until you end the script by clicking the shutter button.

There is a short delay then it takes the photo and shows it on the screen
What is so frustrating is that a few days ago I was trying a few things and it started working. The hack for my camera is still being developed so maybe I’ll have to wait
As far as I know, the SX60 port is fully functional. The problems you are having mostly seem to be down to CHDK being confusing and not user friendly. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth your time to learn it.

OT, unhelpful reply moved to its own thread.

Using the LUA script but I have also tried the basic one. I notice a small message on the bottom of the screen saying “interrupt “ . Is that significant?

CHDK shows *** interrupted *** when you press the shutter while a script is running. This ends the script.

If it somehow displays interrupted without you pressing the shutter button, that's a bug or some other problem.

I think I probably pressed the shutter button

To start motion detecting operating I’ll have to try  pressing some button other than the shutter because the shutter button doesn’t work. When I have time I’ll see what happens when I use the remote trigger

What do you mean by "shutter button doesn't work" ? It doesn't start/stop script in CHDK, or it is generally not working on your camera?

Pressing the shutter button in alt mode is how you start scripts in CHDK. If this does not work on your camera, then either
1) There is something very wrong with the port
2) the shutter button is physically broken on your camera

#1 seems unlikely since quite a few people have reported successfully using this camera, although bugs are possible
#2 should be easy to check, since shooting normally without CHDK would also be affected

What remote trigger are you referring to? It's very unlikely the Canon remote trigger accessory (RS-60E3) will be seen as a shutter press by CHDK, although I'm not sure anyone has reported how it interacts with CHDK.
The CHDK USB remote (https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/USB_Remote) can be used to start script.

edit:
Which Canon firmware version does your camera have? You can check in the CHDK menu Miscellaneous -> Build info

:) Nice. Only zeros in the green fields are typical for review mode.
When You turn the jogdial they should change. The color too when the threshold is reached.
Each movement should change them in <rec> mode.
