Some people (like me) find that popup HELP screen very annoying.  Fortunately you can easily disable it so that it never pops up and gets in the way.

  • Start at the CHDK Main Menu
  • Select CHDK Settings
  • Select Menu Settings
  • Scroll down to the menu item Show <ALT> Help Screen
  • Press Func/Set to disable the Help Screen option

That should remove one distraction from your learning experience with CHDK.

As previously explained, the one with the green grid is the motion detection script running.

Fully pressing the shutter in alt mode starts the script if it isn't running. Pressing it while the script is running ends the script.

From everything you've posted, this seems completely normal and working correctly.

Of course, you need to be in shooting mode for the motion detection script to take pictures.

When in shooting mode how do I start motion detecting? The shutter button doesn’t start it and neither does the alt. 
I have the mode wheel on AUTO. Should it be onP or MANUAL

 You kwow to start it in rewiew mode...  ;)  Then turn any wheel in any direction.

Edit: Btw. maybe SX60 is a cam, that needs a very short click to toggle <Alt>mode. More a blow than a touch.  ???

Again, you need to
- have the camera in shooting mode
- enter alt mode
- then fully press the shutter to start the script

After that, the screen with the green grid you have previously posted pictures of should appear, and subsequent motion should trigger shooting.

If some part of this does not happen, you need to clearly describe which step failed and how.

It shouldn't matter for motion detection, though I'd generally suggest P rather than AUTO, because auto has a higher chance of interfering with other CHDK features. M should be fine if you want to control the exposure yourself.

Ok thanks for the tip a out getting rid of the annoying screen. I will try that .
What I have discovered is that the camera is detecting motion I.e. any movement causes the screen to flash but  the shutter doesn’t operate. The motion detect is very sensitive . Any slight vibration sets it off. This makes it almost impossible to see the screen.

In <Alt> mode shutter is good for StartScript <:-X> StopScript.

This is mostly likely a different thing. When the Canon UI updates, the CHDK screen will tend to flicker. If you use AUTO mode, or one of the continuous auto focus modes, this happens very frequently because the Canon UI is continuously updating.

That said, the flickering doesn't interfere with any functionality beyond making the screen hard to read, so if you don't want to mess with getting another build installed, you could just use settings that don't flicker so much like using P mode and turning off continuous AF.

If the motion detection script is running, you should see the green grid with numbers in the squares. The numbers should change when motion is detected. Slowly moving your hand into the field of view is a good way to check this. You can adjust the sensitivity using the "Trigger Threshold" option in the script menu.

thanks for the advice. I have found that the flickering stops when the camera is resting on a firm surface (a table). any vibration sets off the flickering again
