Sx700hs Unable to obtain firmware version

Hi All
I have recently been given an SX700HS and I have copied the vers.req file to the sd card and pressed the view button to start the camera & then pressed the ok/down and other combinations but I am still unable to find the firmware version which should be either 1.00d or 1.00e . If I use the exif tool it tells me it’s 1.00 version4 but if I take this to mean 1.00d and then copy that version of firmware to the sd card I still can’t get it to start chdk. I have used chdk in an A590IS many years ago with success but not this time. I’ve probably missed something very simple but some suggestions would be welcome
Cheers
Nick

I am not sure if I have successfully made the card bootable, but I have had it unlocked and locked and neither seem to work

100 version 4 should be 100d. In any case, if you successfully loaded the wrong version, you should get a black screen and blinking LED.

I am not sure if I have successfully made the card bootable,
How did you make the card bootable? The canon firmware uses a special canon specific string (see https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/Prepare_your_SD_card), not the usual filesystem boot flags that OSes use.

When the card is locked, do you see a message saying "card locked"? If not, your camera may not be detecting the lock switch. See https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=3374.msg31113#msg31113

What size SD card are you using? Cards 64 GB and larger default to exFAT format, which cannot be made bootable.

Are you copying files using a Mac? If so, this may apply: https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/FAQ/Mac#Still_Having_Trouble?

I am using a win 11 pc to do all pc operations.  I am using a 4gb sandisk card.
The 1.00d  version for this camera didn’t appear to have ps.fi2 or the ps.fir in it so I used method no 3 to make the card bootable. (I also tried method 1 but no luck).  To do this I I needed to download an older version of Rufas as the new versions have removed the bootable option.
I used EOScard 1.4 first up to make bootable and although the operation appeared to be successful as the chdk logo in the bottom left went from red to grey, I felt that it might not have been successful, hence why I used rufas.
So after extracting the chdk file and making bootable and moving the lock switch to lock I inserted the card in the camera and started the camera.
The camera started as it would normally but told me the card was locked. (I also tried starting it using the play switch which is not the correct method but I tried it anyway) but no success either way .

Yes, unfortunately some digic 6 cameras have problems starting from FI2, so it's not included.

Assuming you mean https://rufus.ie/en/, this will almost certainly only set the standard bootable flag, not the canon-specific BOOTDISK string. Additionally, it might destroy the Canon string if it were present.

You must use a canon-specific app like Stick, Chimp or EOScard, or set it directly.

The EOS card UI is a bit confusing. You should have CHDK selected (CHDK icon red) then click "save"

This morning I did it all again . Formatted the card in the camera extracted on different occasions both the d & e versions into the card , used eoscard 1.4 to make bootable, locked the card both times and inserted the card in the camera & turned it on, ( no luck) , screen said “ card locked “ both times. I tried starting it also with the play button but no luck. I also tried different combinations of other buttons ——- no luck

My next set of tests will be with, either an 8 or 16 gig card to see if the card is the problem. I realise I could be the problem but at the moment I think my processes are correct

IMO, it's very unlikely to be the card. The symptoms you describe most likely mean either:
1) The BOOTDISK string is not correctly written to the card
2) The DISKBOOT.BIN file is not in the root of the SD card

edit:
Here's a build with a PS.FI2 file. You should not use it for shooting, but you can try using it to load CHDK once with "firm update" and make the card bootable. If that succeeds, you can switch to the standard autobuild by just replacing the files.
