The Canon side clearly has a record of the focus steps, ie upper and lower brackets. Have you come across a record that has the total number of rotations, ie the 28mm macro has some 2200.
Another limit (M3,100) :29 GB SD-memory / sizeof (.cr2+.jpg) {=~42+6Mb} =~ 600 steps/card.
