Is there a way to set the focal length, i.e. the level of zoom in a script? I am currently using two minute exposures, and a repeatable zoom level or FL is desirable as it allows images from different nights to be used.

Here is an example for what I am doing. If the F/L was the same on other nights I could use those pics to add to this image.

You can use set_zoom()
M100 100a, M3 121a, G9x II (1.00c), 2*G1x (101a,100e), S110 (103a), SX50 (100c), SX230 (101a), S45,

Confirming that the variable is in mm ... set_zoom(100) = 100mm ?

Nope - it's in zoom steps.  Each Powershot zoom lens has multiple discrete steps across it's zoom range.  The number of steps varies by camera model. See : set_zoom
