The cameras seem to have identical hardware.

How do I bypass the firmware version checking?

They do not. For starters SX260 is a Digic 5 camera, where SX270 is Digic 6

(SX270, SX275 and SX280 are virtually the same hardware as SX270 except for wifi and GPS, and use CHDK builds from the same source, though the builds themselves are still slightly different)

You cannot, but CHDK builds are available for the SX260, so there is no need.
