Clicking sound while using CHDK

I own an S3IS camera. I noticed a clicking type noise in the camera. Initially I thought the camera required servicing. I switched off the CHDK feature and it disappeared. Recently I purchased another 2GB ram card. I inserted the card without the CHDK feature loaded and noticed silence. After running some tests with a number of CHDK compiles, I have noticed that the noise is associated with the CHDK program. I am wondering if anyone else using CHDK on any CHDK compatible Canon has experienced the problem. I do not use the S3IS for movies, so I do not know what the interaction is. I have read on the net that people are complaining about camera noise picked up by the microphone. The clicking type noise may be a source of the problem.

All I can confirm is that the type of clicking noise varies with the CHDK features loaded into the S3IS. It varies from almost silence to a loud whir type sound.

It may be advantageous that anyone using CHDK check their camera. You do not need to be in shooting mode. Turn your camera on and place your ear against the camera. You should hear some noise. Take a few photos at different zooms and have another listen. It seems to me that the noise is associated with the zoom motor but I cannot be 100% certain.

If you have a spare memory chip without CHDK try it as well; otherwise turn off CHDK and try it. It may be advisable to document this phenomenon to save the costs associated of returning your camera to a Canon service agent.

I have posted this topic at the S5IS User Forum.

(S3IS camera only; I have no experience with other Canon's)

I have posted this reply at the S5IS User Forum.

In reply to wontolla's suggestion on the S5is User Forum:

I have tried grand pre-14-s3is-100a-144. I can confirm that the noise is motor zoom related. I tried holding the camera to my ear while zooming. The noise with the grand build is very different from my original post; sometimes quiet, other times noisy whir, clicks or a high frequency tone. I fully zoomed in and out. The noise and type of noise depends on where the zoom setting is. I took some test shots outside my home on an overcast day; the zoom noise does not affect the focus, zoom or the quality of the shots.

i cannot confirm this. can you supply the EXACT steps to reproduce the clicking noises?
what i did:

start the camera (s3is) without chdk in record mode. press ear against camera - silence.
zoom in - noises (of course from the motor). about 1 to 2 seconds after zooming i noticed a low noise, possibly from "putting the motor to sleep".
zoom out - same behaviour as in zoom in.

then i started the cam with chdk loaded.
did the same, heard the same.

can it be that you are referring to the sounds the continuous autofocus generates?
anyways, i need the exact steps to try to reproduce it.
also make sure that no overrides were in effect when you tested the chdk versions (you switched the versions, but did you also delete the chdk.cfg file?).

Regarding the clicking/whirring sound. I have reformatted an sdram card with cardtricks and loaded the latest yapCHDK. All the parameters were set to default. I can replicate the noise every time. I took some shots in the default load settings. The only settings I used after the shots were USB cable enable; RAW on; Fonts Arial 16b. That is the only settings I use at the moment.

No other settings in the camera have been touched.

The noise is definitely associated with the lens zoom. The noise and the type of noise varies. It is noisy when it zooms, sometimes a clicking sound. Silent when ready for shooting. Afterwards it can be silent or starts clicking by itself.

When I originally posted the problem the camera was dead quiet. I have noticed that my camera is now repeating exactly the same noise with a blank sdram card without CHDK loaded. Is there a default reset for the S3IS or is there a possibility that some parameters are being written to and retained by the camera?

Is there a default reset for the S3IS

Maybe if you remove the CR1220 battery for a few minutes/hours? (Inside AA battery compartment).

That clicking noise is the aperture changing automatically. The reason it changes when you zoom is that the scene is changing and the aperture has to compensate for the new exposure. You probably never noticed these noises before because you weren't listening for them. There is nothing wrong with your camera you're just paying attention to the sounds it has always made.
