Canon EOS M3 and VR180?

Hey there my name is Janosch Simon and with all the new VR180 stuff I am interested in doing precision sync with the EOS M3 for vr180 video content,  but I am not sure if that camera is supported for precision sync.Or how can i sync two camers sensors readouts? i had a Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera rig where that worked but sadly one of cameras died :(. I found another Canon hack that supports this called SDM.I contacted the author Microfunguy and he said the M3 is supported but he has never received feedback about precision sync. In fact, he suspects no DIGIC 6 camera will allow the 'period counter' maximum count to be changed. for some reason.
Can CHDK change the maximum period count of any DIGIC 6 camera ?

cheers and thx Janosch

The only CHDK cameras with CAM_REMOTE_USES_PRECISION_SYNC defined are A1200 and G12, both Digic 4. Reverse engineering and testing would be needed to figure out if this technique can be applied to Digic 6 cams, but at a minimum it's likely the MMIO addresses are different.

Hey Janosch, I’ve been down the sync rabbit hole myself. From what I’ve gathered, the EOS M3 might not be great for precision sync due to the DIGIC 6 processor limitations. I’ve played around with CHDK, and it usually can’t handle hardware tweaks like changing the period counter max on those cameras. I’d suggest checking out cameras with better sync options or using timecode generators for a more reliable setup. It’s a bit of a hassle, but it might save you headaches down the line.

FWIW, I have no reason to believe there is anything inherent about Digic 6 that makes it less suited for this than other generations, someone would just have to actually do the reverse engineering work on the specific camera.

Of course, as is often the case in reverse engineering, it's impossible to be certain without doing a significant part of the work.
