I'm not yet using raw cause I don't really know what to do with it.
So you have the raw photo. now what do you do with it and in which sequence.
I guess you:
1. convert it to DNG
then what?
do you clear the noise in some software? which?
then what?
white balance, brightness, contrast, RGB levels, sharpness? in which software?

basically a guide from those who actually squeeze everything possible out of the raw photos would be interesting.

Yes, usually you will convert to DNG.  I've always heard that you must first set your white balance.  Most of your adjustments will rely on a correct white balance being set.  After white balance is set, you can do whatever you want in pretty much the order you want.  I usually denoise after the bulk of my adjustments to clear up the noise that was made visible by sharpening, curves, etc.

Software is something you will have to find out for yourself. I stick with free stuff (like ufraw, and RawTherapee).

I use my a570is with chdk for BW. Load the CRW in RAW developper, and create JPG's. I like that I can control the noise reduction, and change the exposure,,

Check the examples in my flickr stream:

I use my RAW files for prints and web pages.
I use Adobe Lightroom to manage the photos and do printing from Lightroom or Photoshop.
One of my cameras is a Canon A1100IS running CHDK and uses the in camera conversion to DNG.
It is one less step and CHDK seems to add colours and white balance from the cameras internal settings.
If you just use the RAW CR2 file, you are responsible for conversion and white balance.
At least my DNG files from the A1100IS are right on.
In Lightroom, I use the Canon 5D MK II camera develop profiles for all of my Canon RAW files.
