Mark,

Well--you already ordered the A720 (that is the one I chose too).

But, to finish the answers (in my humble opinion):

Think, overall the A720 has a pinch better IQ--and it is pretty close to the best Canon P&S IQ out there (S5, G9, A650 may be a touch better in some conditions--plus just more pixels). For the price/performance, either A570/720 is hard to beat.

The differences between the A570/A720 with CHDK--Not enough practical differences between the two to matter to me (see list).

Time lapse, shutter speeds, etc. all work the same between the two cameras (they both have Digic III processors--so they probably both have need work in the video compression options).

I like the 6x zoom--I took some simple videos of deer in our area with 6x zoom--and it was just like using binoculars.

Probably all of these P&S cameras can really use a 25-28mm (35mm equivalent) wide angle lens. There are just so many times that having a wider lens is convenient (inside shots, buildings, etc.). If I buy a lens for my A720--it would be a Wide Angle adapter. But a Canon set (LA-DC58G adapter + WC-DC58N wide angle lens) add up to $225 list--more than I paid for the camera.  :o

Hey BB, do you work at a camera shop or something? You know more about these cameras than the sellers at the most prestigious camera centers.

Another quick question:
Do you happen to have an adapter for your A720?
It seems like Lensmate doesn't fabricate them and Canon's LA-DC58G is too expensive.
Also I've read some comments about the ebay ones not fitting tightly in the camera.

As you said, good wide angle lenses are expensive, so I guess if I can use one of them (Rynox 6600 for example) with both cameras (S3 and A720) perhaps it is worth the money.

Cheers!

i bought my lenses at ebay for half the price, and i can use em on both the a620 and the s3is (need different adapters of course). these are the canon WA & Teleconverters. Also got two Raynox Macro Lenses, which also fit on the adapter.
Just the adapter alone is worth a lot, because it a) shields the built-in lens (for example when camera falls down) b) can take filters (i have a skyfilter on my camera all the time, to protect camera from dust and water and the likes) and in case of my s3is it is really looking more "professional" with the black camera sporting the black adapter and the huge wideangle lens ;)

Thank you Wontolla for the complement.

I will be the first to say that I don't have an artistic bone in my body--but I was a pretty good development engineer--So I got good at reading specs. and figuring out how they fit into real life. I have a lot of general experience--but I am not a camera buff--I just listen pretty well to all of you guys and gals out there that know more than I.

To be honest, as a good engineer--I am also pretty cheap. So when I picked the A720is to replace my 8 year old 2MP camera--it was just the best bang for the buck digital that I saw last January--and, at that time, the A720 was the first Dry OS camera that was being worked on for support by CHDK--so I took a chance that CHDK would be available soon for it--and it was.  :xmas

I agree, from what I have read, the Canon Adapter is a piece of plastic with some issues of loose fit and easy to damage threads (~$15-$25 pricing--excluding Ebay). If Lensmate offered a metal one--I probably would get it for filters/protection.

Telephoto lenses, from the samples I have seen posted--stay away from all of them. Just using digital enlargement had better resolution than anything with a telephoto lens.

Wide angle lenses--a tougher call--I bought one for my camcorder years ago because I found that almost anytime I was inside a building, I could not get a good scene shot of what was going on without a Wide Angle. With a normal lens--it as if I was going around with a "tube" and always looking at just a small piece of my surroundings and having to pan a lot. With a Wide Angle--I felt that I could capture the entire environment+people much better in one shot.

So, I will probably wait a bit until I see some "good" reviews (good as in technically competent and good as good results) of a wide angle lens (probably the Canon)... There have been enough complaints (like on Amazon of the Canon adapter tube causing vignetting at the wide angle zoom setting) that I am not quite sure that it is worth the price yet (at least for me).

Your thoughts?

PS: Personally, I avoid EBay--don't like PayPal, and many of the "new in box" and other items are just being "fenced"...

ebay stolen goods - Google Search

How many--I do not know--but I just want to avoid the whole scene....

Thank you guys for the answers. I hope this is in the interest of blaskos too and I am not hijacking his thread.

@PhyrePhox
Yes, that's exactly the combo I'm looking for . And I too keep the adapter and the ultra violet filter on my S3. Humid weather over here so I preffer to constantly wipe the filter instead of the camera lens. Filter is replaceable if scratched.

Me too! That's why I'll get the A720 instead of the G7 or G9. As a S3 user, I am spoiled with the 12x so I really need at least 6x if purchasing a second camera.

That is preciselly my concern. I'd preffer to buy from Lensmate (done it before and they have many good reviews) but they don't fabricate the A720 adapter.
Those ebay sellers have very low feedback (98.3%). I'll buy one and let you know of my results.

Cheers!
