bracketing - sequence suggestion

I'm using bracketing for HDR purposes, so clearly I'm using +- bracketing on shutter speed.

Given the nature of images and sensors, highlight burnout (in the long exposures) is a bigger problem that lack of shadow details (in the short exposures).

On a 5 bracket set, I often don't use the longest exposure.

In the interests of reducing the potential for subject blur, and getting a contiguous set, may I suggest that instead of the sequence being taken alternating outwards from the centre ("correct") exposure, the sequence is taken starting with the shortest exposure, and working towards the longest.

This leaves the most questionable and difficult exposure, the longest, readily "removeable", and also means that a good number of shots is taken soon after the shutter is pressed, which also seems desirable.

Maybe I'm not getting the idea but you can choose from three bracketing types: +/- (default), + and -.

Assuming you are talking about "bracketing in continuous mode", since this is AllBest's Builds section.

Yes; I'm talking about the *order* the bracketed shots are taken in under the mode I use, which is (as I said) +/-.

Absolutely.

what wontolla was saying is that the option is already there :-)

I don't have the camera with me, but if I recall correctly it's under "Extra Photo Operations" - "Bracketing in continuous mode" - "Bracketing type"

To answer to the original question: that can't (or rather shouldn't) be done, because the bracketing feature doesn't know how many shots you are going to fire. It works just the same in continuous burst mode as it does in custom timer mode or in a script.

But maybe we could have +, -, +/- AND a new -/+ option? I.e. for a 4-shot bracketing set with 1ev steps:

-/+ gives exposures 0, -1, +1, -2 Ev
+/- gives exposures 0, +1, -1, +2 Ev
- gives exposures 0, -1, -2, -3 Ev
+ gives exposures 0, +1, +2, +3 Ev

+ gives exposures 0, +1, +2, +3 Ev

What about first shifting your exposure to -2 (easily done with the standard Canon correction button) and then add + bracketing? That would add up to:

+ gives exposures -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, etc.

Yes Ev compensation is very useful for bracketing if you aren't in M mode. Using Ev comp. -2 (or rather +2 for bugbear's work flow) is ok, but it kind of screws up what you see on LCD while aiming the camera...

Ah. Oh. Well, that's reasonable, but "unfortunate" from my POV.

I note the suggestion else where in the thread to "rig" my start exposure to be quick, and use the + option, although the viewfinder difficulty is quite real.

My only alternative (if I want my "dream") is to go back to using a script, but I'm guessing that burst mode gives me better frame rate that a script (input welcomed on this question).
