Well, offline conversion routine could erase raw after conversion to DNG and leave JPG + DNG

But since SD cards are quite cheap right now, I don't hink it's worth the efforts of developers

I'm wondering, is there a procedure to convert raw to "real" cr2 somewhere in the firmware and only needs to be called
Not in the S5 anyway, as far as I know. If I recall correctly, those files can be identified by the string 'HEAPCCCD'. The absence of this string makes it very easy to assume that the functionality isn't present.

As for the conversion: It takes a couple of seconds on my Sempron 3000+. The ARM architecture is quite powerful, though, it's possible that an implementation in ASM can be very fast. I'd have to look into the DNG and PS-RAW format, though, but I'm willing to give it a try if it doesn't look too hard.

Takes a bit longer here, but remember, it doesn't have to be on the spot. You could develop the CRWs later, by using a menu function, that applies the jpg curves and exif data to the CRW, generates the DNG and delets the JPG and CRW files to save space. As I calculated above, that means you can take twice the RAW pictures on the same card.

I propose that all digital camera owners be cursed with 35mm-film for one year with only 24 and 36-exposure rolls so they realize how spoiled they've become so fast. :)

Don't worry, I keep thinking about that everyday, even though I use an two of those antique cameras.. or three... it was soooo long ago... :P

Btw, why is my karma -1? Does someone hates me already?

However, you can use camera+CHDK as an amazing near-lab-quality advanced light analysis tool. See the Creative Uses section on this issue. :)
