Move To Better Hosting

Recently I tried getting an account at SourceForge, however I saw that it is kind of limited. It does not allow php write access to files on the server, so scripts such as SMF and MediaWiki won't work...sooo I think we should hold a fundraiser, $120 for 2 years ($5 a month) and we get....We get a free domain (and I can actually buy one too to go along :)). We have unlimited resources, literally, so we can make CHDK grow...a lot! I plan on writing a little php script to automatically package a new version of CardTricks (fully automated) with a camera build, and when a n00b comes over, they just select their camera (by searching or from a narrow-down list, and CardTricks does the rest.

Here is the plan:

        UNLIMITED Hosting Space -yaay
      UNLIMITED Site Bandwidth - yay
      Host UNLIMITED Domains - if someone wants to host chdk-related site
      Unlimited Pop/Imap Email Accounts - i suggest google apps
      SSH Access (Secure Shell) - could come in useful
      SSL, FTP, Stats - need ftp
      CGI, Ruby (RoR), Perl, PHP, MYSQL -php & mysql =good
      Front Page Extensions - ha who uses that
      Free Domain Forever - woohoo
      Free Site Builder - don't need
      Best Support in the Industry - umm..suure

Quoting my answer to your pm: I don't see this as necessary, at least from my p.o.v.. I.e. I do not have any extra expense for hosting this board on my account.

But, as I have said several times, should the community want to move the board, I would not object.

Well (sorta memory-quoting and adding on-sorta :P) from my pm back: if it does not cost you anything extra (unlim. resources) can you also:
* move wiki here
* move all builds here
* move CardTricks here
* move sourcecode here
* provide space for small projects such as a "Camera Chooser"
* put it under a domain (I am going to probably buy a .info soon for it, cuz they are so cheap :P)

that way it would be much organized, easy to find, and much more interactive.

also, it seems that you use "http://dailyrazor.com/" hosting...it doesn't really seem to have very nice plans...
20 bucks for 100G/200G ds/bw...why did you choose that?

acseven,

i don't know what "the community" want, but i'm very satisfied with THIS board and the administration, i see NO reason for moving anything to anywhere !

The wikia has a good place, the sources are also organized well...

Why should we always move well working things 3 times around the whole world ?

Perhaps because this is easier as working on it ?

...My opinion...My vote: move nothing !

well...it might be working well, but it is not working as well as it could :)
kinda like saying, hey we have comps with 256 megs of ram w/win 2k, they work well, they run office, they browse the internet. sure...but why not get brand new ones with 4 gigs of ram, a q6600, and an 8800 GTX? would run even better :P and be more enjoyable

also acseven if you are worried about moving everything, it is REALLY easy. just copy everything from the chdk folder on you hosting, dump the forum database, dumb the wiki database, then build small script to import everything to mediawiki (or use plenty of existing ones). Then tweak up a few setting (un/pw/server/domain for the mysql connection)

...money, conserve the ambience, produce less waste, save electricity, have a nice & silent office...

You can do so of course, but not everybody takes the same line...

Man!, That would brake countless links in magazines, other forums, personal blogs, bookmarks etc. The damage would be incalculable!

you could always write a mod_rewrite rule on the old site redirecting to the new site. speaking of bookmarks, can you guys post your CHDK bookmark links here?

Here is my very limited *blush* list:
* Card Tricks - a small utility to help manage SD cards [currently v. 1.33]
* Helping Get CHDK More Popular
* Login

I think acseven knows that.
Anyway, I think "Unlimited for cheap" plans are more like the boxes with Win2k and 256MB RAM 'and they run office'. I wouldn't be surprised if that's actually what you get, sharing it with about a thousand customers to make it profitable.

And one more thing: the distributed nature of this project is a good thing, in my opinion. When something goes down or can't handle traffic/load/bandwidth, it's just one thing instead of everything. The servers we're running things off now are running just fine and I haven't had any (serious) issues with them since I got here. They also don't show any signs of struggling with load, etc. I prefer to keep everything the way it is, so we don't have to find out that the ultra-turbo hosting can't handle the load when everything is moved and can't easily be restored into the old state.

Oh and I don't think mod_rewrite is the tool for redirecting an old site to a new site. I don't even think we have access to that feature and if we do, it's useless because it's already in hosting under our (indirect) control, so no need to move to a new provider.

Dang. I hate when my examples are used against me :P
However it might not be entirely true. And if it isn't, there is a 30-day money back guarantee :)
But here are some reviews of it:
* Hostmonster Review - Our Evaluation of Hostmonster

Hostmonster Hosting Plans and Reviews

* HostMonster Reviews Hosting HostMonster reviews Host Monster reviews.WebHosting Plans
* HostMonster Customer Web Hosting Review - HostMonster Blog Hosting Review by Milo Doddard

and there is nothing saying "scam" if you search up hostmonster...that's a good sign :) anyways I think it is definately worth a 30-day trial if the community decides to switch

Why not? You can use regex-s :) what more can you want :P\
and mod_rewrite is a standard feature...used in tons of scripts (inc. coppermine). your host uses mod_rewrite rewriting ?query to index.php?query :)! About wikia...you can do manual redirects I suppose...when somebody has time...and if you are worried about forum->wiki links, a simple php script can rewrite all the wiki links.:
$new_post = preg_replace('/^http:\/\/chdk.wikia.com/wiki\/(.*)?/','http://wiki.newurl.com/$1','$post); or something of that sort (haven't done em for a while)
