There are solid-state relays that you could use.

Signal from the receiver closes the relay contacts which then passes the 4.5Vdc battery voltage to the USB cable.

Can remove the speaker to obtain plenty of room for a circuit board for components.

You can use IR to make a small and simple remote trigger.

All you need apart from the two components (transmitter and receiver) is a 5v supply and small on/off switch and a cable with a USB plug on the end.
