You could use a script that "presses" that button.
Code: (lua) [Select]
post_levent_to_ui("PressPBButton")
sleep(20)
post_levent_to_ui("UnpressPBButton")
Copy this into a file like playbttn.lua, select it as script, full shoot in ALT mode will switch between play and rec mode. Beware, it acts exactly as the button, including its behaviour when the cam is in play mode (i.e. can switch the camera off).

Hello,
I don't really have much experience with CHDK. used it a bit on my A1000 in the past, to unlock RAW-files. But not much else.
I got pretty much the same problem. My G12's Playback-button is broken, which is quite an inconvenience. This post lightened up my mood a bit, thinking "hey, putting the function on another button, would be nice". But then i started wondering: "How exactly do i even get CHDK working on my camera without the playback-button?" Maybe i am wrong, but it seems like all the install-instructions require me to use the playback-b. No PB=>No CHDK=>No button-change. Or is there a way to go around it?

thx in advance

Many instructions suggest using the "firmware update" method to make your card bootable, which may require a play button, but you can also do it on a PC using a tool like STICK http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Prepare_your_SD_card#Bootable_SD_Card_Method_Preparation

If the play button is the default alt button, you might have trouble starting the script, but you can modify the .CFG file to make the script autostart, or to set a different alt button if your camera supports adjustable alt. This isn't an issue for G12, since the default alt button is the print / shortcut button.
Don't forget what the H stands for.
