First off great forum here, found tons of new stuff but not what I was looking for when searching USB download etc... Anyway, here's the post I posted on RCGroups but the question still applys.  How do I get the pictures off the camera using the USB cable when CHDK is loaded and after taking some pictures? I use a sony now that just dumps to laptop in the field and that works great want to do the same with canon...

Here's my question:

Ok runing this version of chdk:
1.70-148-a570-101a-57.zip got it from the chdk wiki page Sterodata maker something version.

I'm runing a simple remote switch using the Gent-led cable:

The shutter works great on my gear channel so no problems there. The problem comes in when I go to get the pictures off the camera. My mount is not set up to constantly access the SD card itself as the AA's I'm using seem to get me a quite a few runs before needing to be replaced. When I unplug my shutter cable and put the regular USB cable on it, it doesn't see the photos on the camera. Now if I pull the SD card and put it in a reader I can see the pics no problem, remove them and put back in camera and were good to go.

So what are my options? I did see an option in the chdk firmware to make USB downloadable and I've tried it with and without the dot in the option and neither work. I tried turning the camera off and on thinking at that point it would be like a normal cam and still can't see the pics on the card.

I did read somnething about using auto-load and then locking the card but that kind of defeats the purpose of downloading/editing via the USB cord unless this just disables writing to the root of the card and the image folder is still accessable?

Ideas for this CHDK noob?  Thank You.

I remember read this Why can't I access my RAW files normally?
Maybe it helps.

Thanks, read that over and it has to do with .raw files for the most part.  I ended up changing my mount for now to where the camera can come on/off easier to get access to the bottom so we'll see how it goes from there. Thanks for pointing me in another direction, more information is always good :)

Hellsiege,

I have auto-boot (with locked card ) on an A640 and have no trouble getting images to PC (WinXP) via usb when card is not accessible, (also using usb remote button).

I change usb cables, connect to computer, switch to playback mode, turn camera on and ...... images on PC, (opens up in "My Computer" as Canon PowerShot, etc.). Move Copy them to a file and they're downloaded.

The locked card is read with no problem. (Canon software takes it's time with a card reader in this case and does not respond to the usb connection, but no matter, the computer sees it.)

Perhaps the difference in CHDK build and camera used may give difficulties; I am far from qualified to discuss, (or think about), that!  ;)

Hellsiege,
you have to disable the "Enable remote (USB)" in CHDK menu, only then your PC can register the camera & use it as USB device, on most cameras you have to go to playback mode, too...ok, that's bad when your cam isn't reachable for change the settings  :(

I thought I tried it both ways but going to play with it again tonight before this weekends flight tests... Yeah the cam is reacable and can access all the buttons but have to remove it from the mount to access the battery/SD card door.  I did change the design like I mentioned but still have to take the rubber bands off camera, and mount, then remove mount and unscrew camera... pain in comparison to my sony where I just left it on plane and hooked USB up to it and it would switch to usb mode and give full access to read/write to the card.

Thanks for the replys to this noob issue, I'll get it just need more time to understand it...
