Hey guys :)
As a thank you to CHDK, I bought CanonHack.info. I know it isn't much, but, better than nothing.

To Admins/Mods:
Just PM the details to your server(s) and I will set it up :)

I suggest:
www.canonhack.info -> chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK
chdk.canonhack.info -> chdk.setepontos.com
dl.canonhack.info -> (redirect) sourceforge site
ab.canonhack.info -> GrAnd's Autobuild site

All other subdomains:
* Users get to create their own chdk based sites...maybe :)

STOP!! Before thou smiteth me, please PM me the reason! . Criticism = bad, constructive criticism = good.

If you wanna applaud, no reason necessary, I know I'm wonderful :P

I am sorry, but this is wrong on two levels ....

1) having the "canon" registered trade mark in the domain name is a bad idea. Canon could come any moment and have the domain transfered to them. There are many examples, a famous one is what Myspace did a while ago:  MySpace Issues Cease & Desist To MySpace Domain Sites

2) deciding a name to use for the community without consulting the community itself could be seen as ... not very diplomatic :-)

After reading all his other threads it appears someone is doing all they can to surreptitiously get CHDK onto their own servers under their own passwords to have complete control over it to make money with it for their self. This looks more and more like some con-artist playing games while pretending to be what they are not.

admin comment: one warning, do not write this kind of accusations.

Keeping that in mind it might not be a good idea to link that domain to CHDK.

Mmm...that is a bit flawed. First of all, DataGhost, Wontolla, etc. all know I am not that type of person. I am a lot of bad things, but con-artist isn't one of them.
Next, I want to give CHDK total ownership of the domain. Also, I am not asking for passwords at all (they are just not required)...I am just asking for the ip addresses of their servers, so I can forward the domain/subdomains to there. If I decided to become a con-artist at any time...it would be pretty hard to do, since I would have no access to the servers themselves. Again, it's CHDK's choice whether they want to take the domain or not, but I spent my dollar to help CHDK :P so I will feel good either way.

Mmm...I see your point, but lots of sites have the word "Canon" in their names. Also on the front page of the wiki, it says the hack is for Canons. I don't really think having a domain with the word Canon would change Canon's views on us. We are a small community of hackers, so far bringing no financial problems to them.

I actually wanted to make a poll about it, but I was advised not to by a few members. The reason is, that there are bots (and ppl) on the loose looking for nice domains to grab. "CanonHack" sounds pretty nice...and they might have taken it. Therefore I consulted with Wontolla and bought CanonHack.info. Again it's only a dollar, not a big loss (to me anyways).

...You're doing it again, adcz. People are telling you it's a bad idea on several levels, and you just refuse to listen. But this time you really have gone too far.
You insist you're no con artist yet you say:

:blink: :blink:

If you're not a con artist, then let me guess; You're one of those compulsive stalker types that send the victims of your fixation unwanted gifts and can never figure out why you're not ever well received.

...How far off the mark am I?

You just brought a financial problem to Canon (if you don't comply). The thing is, "Canon" is a trademark and the people at Canon are therefore obligated to defend their trademark if they know of an infringement. If they do not take action against your domain (after they find out about it, which is probably within now and a couple of days/weeks), knowing the infringement exists, they will lose their trademark. They *must* take action, that's why it's not a good idea. Also, if you explicitly link it to CHDK, it might be just another 'drip in the bucket'.

Example of a trademark lawsuit over something 'simple and harmless':
   Microsoft files lawsuit against mother, creator of MSNLOCK

Good point. It is not worth the risk of receiving a "cease and desist" letter from Canon. We don't need a domain name as we are not selling anything.

@adcz
I agree with fbonomi's second point. I advised you to set up a poll so the community could decide about this. I also suggested not to use a .com domain for similar reasons as the ones exposed by fbonomi. IMO, we don't need Canon to think we are making money out of their cameras.

To Wontolla & Dataghost:
Buying the domain was a bad idea on my part. I should have set up a private irc discussion with all the mods/admins/ppl I trust before I bought it. i suppose we could do this later on (i could definitely afford another .info)
I suppose using this domain for external purposes might lead to problems with Canon. I am glad I got the .info rather than the .org :D, losing a $1 is not as bad as losing $10 :) If you want, we could still use it for "CHDK mail" between us or something (maybe as a .htaccess protected shortcut to the auto-build page or whatever. If not, it's not a problem. Just a buck loss :) And besides, I guess I will just use it for a site about hacking cannons in the middle ages or something (you never know, maybe some ppl get ideas for big sites this way!) :P

To Kitty:
Give it a rest kitty...why are you still criticizing me...the "Contacting Canon" discussion is over. No need to hold a grudge against me over a discussion that didn't even concern you. Just leave it alone, and we can go back to being friends.

Oh come on...that is not even what a stalker does :P Plus it's kinda hard to "stalk" an open source organization :D

Hi,

I've been away for a few days and only now I came back to read the forum.

Regarding this thread, and after reading it just here and there, I really do not think that this would be a good domain for the chdk projects. As already said, the fact that it has "canon" on it could be troublesome.

Cheers

edit: and my personal comment, it is not a very "constructive" name either... sorry
