I would like to purchase one of the cameras on the list of CHDK cameras but I am having trouble narrowing it down.  I am looking to spend right around 200 or less if possible.  What is the best bang for the buck camera that works with CHDK?  Also where would you recommend purchasing the camera from?  Thank you in advance for any helpful information.

The A720is is a pretty good camera from the price. A650 is nice if you want more pixels and a 4xAA battery for flash (faster recycle times--the 2xAA A720 and A570 are pretty slow).

The A570is looks like a nice camera too (4x zoom vs 6x for A720is)... The A570 does not have anything to allow mounting of external filters/lenses like the A720 and other more expensive cameras have.

Otherwise, the next step up would be the S5is--but probably a lot more than you would want to spend.

I like my A720is. Yes it is light and plastically feeling--but, so far, has been rugged and takes very nice photographs.

Actually the A570 does have a means of mounting lenses and filters -see Canon A570 fitted with a 37mm adapter on Flickr - Photo Sharing! and Add-ons for a Canon A570 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! for example.

I just was in your situation.  I listened to BB and was torn between a720 and a570.  I went w/ the 720 and like it.  The flash time reload is a lil long, but it does not bother me.  I got chdk working and its pretyt amazing.  I just dont know all the functions yet so it will take a lil time for that

Zeno, you are absolutely correct. There is a Canon and other after market lens adapters for the A570. My mistake.

Does anyone have both the A720 and A650?  I have an A720 but wonder if the bigger sensor in the A650 might give better image quality.  The reviews and DPReview forum messages seem to say the quality is not better, perhaps worse.  Anyone here have an opinion?

I think I already calculated this before, using a sloppy calculation. Basically, 8 MP at 1/2.5" is roughly the same pixel density as 12 MP at 1/1.7". Therefore you can expect noise levels to be equal and due to the huge inaccuracy in my calculation, perhaps the 12MP sensor is worse.
