I can't get SDM 1.70-148-a650-100d-57 working on my A650IS with a 16GB SD card. I've already read http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,1623.0.html and http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/quick.htm and I can't figure it out.

I've tried to make it work using the SDM quick guide but there is a step that I don't understand. In the section for cards larger than 4GB is has the following three lines of instructions:

1. Select Disk Management and your removable disk (titled CANON_DC) will be shown as having a single partition (see above).

2. Exit Computer Management and manually copy the SDM files PS.FIR and DISKBOOT.BIN to the card.

3. Start-up SDM and in menu Debug Parameters, select 'Make card with two partitions' and then 'Swap partitions'.

The first two instructions are easy, but the third doesn't make sense to me. Start-up SDM? Isn't that what I've been trying to do this entire time? And earlier up in the guide it says these cameras (TX1, S3IS, G7, A550, A560, A570, A630, A640, A710) are able to make multiple partitions. Well I'm using the A650 and I haven't seen anything in my camera's menus or manual about making partitions, so does this guide even apply to me?

I read that I should be able to get AllBest working if I use Cardtricks. Should I just do that instead? I don't actually need the extras for stereo imaging. I just chose that package because it's supposed to work automatically.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance. :)

Yes, but the card is now bootable.

It is not in Canon's menus or manual, it is in Debug Parameters menu.

The next release will have an automatic installer that requires you to enter less information.

If you do not need stereo or certain other features, use the main build.

I'd highly suggest you read through this entire thread first to get some background and insight into why SDM & CHDK will only work on a partition formatted FAT and why your 16GB card needs a second partition formatted FAT32...

Okay I've done a lot of reading and this is what I think I've learned. There are two basic problems.

Problem one: My A650IS runs DryOS so there is no firmware update option to manually load CHDK.

Problem two: Autoload only works on Fat16 which only goes up to 4GB but I'm trying to use a 16GB card.

Now, either of these problems can be solved individually. For DryOS, just use autoload. And for a 16GB card, just use the dual partition method within CHDK. The problem is when you have both these problems at the same time, one problem prevents you from fixing the other. Specifically, I need to access CHDK to do the dual partition procedure, but I can't access CHDK without autoload, but I can't autoload without doing the dual partition procedure, but... etc etc.

That thread you showed me goes on and on about ways to do this, but they are all difficult, complicated, confusing, and imperfect (such as not being able to read the card in Windows). However, I think I've come up with a clever solution.......... Just buy a 4GB card and use that whenever you want the extra features! :lol

The current solutions to my problem are a little out of my league. But, Microfunguy, it sounds like you're working on a version that will be a little more automatic? Does this mean I won't have to have my own linux box or know how to edit FAT tables or make special drivers in Windows?
