Hello!

I intend to buy a new SDHC card for my Canon PowerShot S5 IS and I am wondering what is the largest size that works with CHDK (using any tricks available)?

Has anyone tried 32 GB or 16 GB?

Hello again!

I see that there is something wrong with my question :). Either noone knows (is noone using S5 IS?) or there is some obvious FAQ that explains it.

Could anyone comment on this (e.g. with a link to this 'mystical' FAQ)? I would really like to buy a large card that I could use on S5... I would not have asked if I had a good source of information on this.....

Prior to asking on the Forum, I filed a support to Canon but the answer was highly unsatisfactory (use max. 4 GB). I also searched the Internet only to find one post on one forum informing that 8GB works but is very slow. My way of thinking about it is that any compliant SDHC hardware should support any SDHC card. The only problem might be in too big cluster size of FAT32. It is not clear to me, why there could be a slowdown with 8GB card. I presume it should be otherwise, as we are dealing with large files and hence a big cluster size should be the advantage.

Would any Canon PowerShot S5 IS owner post the capacity of his card. Thank you.

Well, i've bought a 4Gb card which works without any problems, haven't tried any bigger card.
But i'm curious too, as i was thinking of buying a 8 Gb card and i wouldn't want to have problems with it.

I saw a similar topic long ago on dpreview which linked to a Canon letter. Long story short, almost all SDHC cards of almost all capacities are supported even though there is no mention of it, anywhere. I'm not sure if only DIGIC III supports it or DIGIC II also. The problem is that it has to be tested beforehand.
However, I would advise you not to put all your eggs in a basket :) Keep multiple 4Gb cards and swap them. This ensures that if your camera gets lost/stolen, SD card develops an error or other mishaps, a part of your photos will be safe.
SD cards at this point could be viewed as disposable or consumables since they're cheaper than batteries.
