i think my tone is rather nice

Well, when a self-proclaimed 'newbie' asked for help you replied  "we can't give support for SDM here".

A curious response, considering your apparent interest .....

Microfunguy, can I ask why you don't like to release your code?

I already know you want to avoid confusion and obviously you have your priorities. But I don't think publishing the sourcecode is considered "additional work" since you have acquired a (GPL) commitment when releasing your SDM builds. I dare to say that if you have one hour of your time to develop SDM, you have 3 additional minutes to upload the sourcecode.

Maybe I'm the only one, but those reasons still don't convince me. Is there any other reason?

I hope you don't just ignore me too.

Cheers.

well, it is you who mentions the yahoo sdm group rather often, don't you. i dont see a problem sending a user who obviously has a problem with SDM to a SDM specialised yahoo group for support, there is nothing wrong with that. besides, what does that have to do with the topic of releasing the source & gpl?

a) not a major reason, but how am i gonna be able to give support for a product i cant obtain the sourcecode for ;)
b) yes, i am interested in SDM and it's features, of course. thats the beauty of opensource, you have branches, you have trunks and you have twigs. sometimes a project branches "off", but some "twigs" will grow back into the trunk. you give and you take. thats the heart of the gpl.

to say that you don't have 2 minutes to zip a folder and upload it is actually pretty amusing.
i really appreciate your work, yes i do.

Of course not, you are part of the PhyrePhox team (as detailed on the WIKI).  :)

I do not know how old PhyrePhox is, but his attitude and stated personal goals do not encourage co-operation.
People refer to the "AllBest build", PhyrePhox refers to the "so-called AllBest build" and his aim of eliminating that title, replacing all currently-available builds with his own 'super-build' and removing all subforums for other builds from this forum.
No developers replied to these suggestions.
Nevertheless, as part of that strategy, when people asked questions about SDM on this forum he initially just discouraged them from using it.
Now, his attitude has hardened and he states that "we do not answer questions about SDM here".
PhyrePhox has two choices .. unconditionally retract that statement or confirm that it is now official policy and which other builds it also applies to.

@ David & PhyrePhoX,

perhaps we all should breathe deeply and come down...

PhyrePhoX:
I can comprehend your viewpoint...sometimes the things unfortunately are not clearly black and white, perhaps we can live also with grey tones, at least for some time...

David:
imho i and also the CHDK comunity benefit from the SDM and your work and support here in the forum, i also have no problem with giving some support to "SDM users", sometimes this can enlarge the horizon...
...and independent from the age the life for a moderator in such a big forum is not easy...

As a compromise: could it be imaginable for you to publish diffs, so the problem with new experimental things (things that may make trouble when they are released for everybody) will be disarmed ?

Again to both of you - pls. continue your great work here, we love you both !  :-*

...and sorry for my bad english  ;)

I am just a simple user and not interested in source code but i do understand what the GPL is all about.

However, as as SDM user i can confirm that 1.71 and 1.72 are maintenance releases which mainly solve some incompabillities with certain camera's and isn't it just wise from David, not to release the source untill the bugs are fixed?

One could argue that the SDM community acts as beta testers and that the source code is released as soon as the build is stable.

@FE50
There's nothing wrong with your English  8)

just my 2 cents.

it is not really the fact that he is violating the gpl that annoys me. it is the fact that he was ignoring my requests regarding this (he could have written his "maintainence release excuse" way earlier - by the way i WAS interested in his windows installer), and also that he went completely offtopic trying to steer the discussion in a whole other direction and ACCUSING me of things i certainly do NOT stand for, i only asked in a polite manner if he would release the sources.
Just because i wrote a user once he should get support in the yahoo group (which david himself did sometimes as well!) means i want SDM out of here? yeah sure, take my words and mangle them, i'm sure you will find a lot of quotes by me backing up your theory. it's actually funny you dare telling me i don't encourage cooperation.

oh i didnt know i had a team until now! suprise surprise.

by the way you can check my age in my member's profile page, but then again - what does it have to do with anything, but it serves good as a distraction ;)

i cant believe i actually answered again here after the diffamation. anyhow, being a mod i must not get carried away and dont press hard feelings. like i said before, it is no big issue (to me personally) that i cant find the sourcecode, it is your statements/opinion regarding this topic that make me feel sad.

anyhow, carry on with your work, i do not want to get rid of you nor SDM nor any other "personal" build in this forum.

Hi ya'll ...

The CHDK forum will not forbid any assistance on any build of this software. It may happen that someone cannot help in a given request, but when that happens, the best thing is to refrain from even commenting.

As for the source code publishing, and moving *again* to the GPL topic, General Public License, states that every pre-compiled binaries have to be accompanied by it's source code, so any publication under the GPL that does not meet these requirements is not is illegal.

I hope that this clears up the subject.

Cheers
