Can't I just access the camera as a mass storage device? I.e. mount it using the regular tools?

I use allbests's build.
Do I need specific Linux kernel modules for being able to access the Ixus?

As far as i know, no - PTP is an userspace library.

No (Dont ask me why, Canon doesnt seem to think this Feature is necessary)  You'll be better off with a cardreader, i guess.

Should gphoto2 work for Ixus 860?
(i.e.: has anybody had success with this camera?)

Any things I could try?

Gphoto2 is just a command line tool, isnt it?

Maybe my question "which application are you using" wasnt clear enough - i'd like to know which frontend you are using.

Try DigiKam, gtkam & gthumb. Generally, PTP should work, as its a standardized protocol. Is it working without CHDK on your card? If not, you'd be better off in a dedicated forum for your distribution. I remember there was a problem with PTP in mandriva, though i dont know if it occurs in other distros.

regards

Hi,

works here with libgphoto-2.4.1-1 (debian lenny), recognized  as IXUS 860.
Also the gnome-dialog (System->Preferences->Removeable Drivers and Media)
works, with the gphoto2 support i suppose. But it is not mounted as removable disk.

When i plugin the usb connectors and start in play mode dmesg tells me:

[  579.949939] usb 7-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
[  580.086787] usb 7-5: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[  580.086787] usb 7-5: New USB device found, idVendor=04a9, idProduct=3160
[  580.086787] usb 7-5: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[  580.086787] usb 7-5: Product: Canon Digital Camera
[  580.086787] usb 7-5: Manufacturer: Canon Inc.
[...]

and "sudo grep -r 3160 /etc/ | grep idProduct" says:

/etc/udev/libgphoto2.rules:ATTRS{idVendor}=="04a9", ATTRS{idProduct}=="3160", MODE="0664", GROUP="plugdev"
/etc/udev/rules.d/025_libgphoto2.rules:ATTRS{idVendor}=="04a9", ATTRS{idProduct}=="3160", MODE="0664", GROUP="plugdev"

So gphoto2 seems to have the info for usb to identify the camera ?

Linux kernel is standart debian-2.6.25-2-686. CHDK USB remote is disabled.

Which version of gphoto2 do you have ? Do you also see the two lines when doing a
"sudo grep -r 3160 /etc/ | grep idProduct" ?

Greets,
moqua

Thanks for teh comments.
I use just gphoto2. No other GUI-shell yet.

This part I don't see:
[  580.086787] usb 7-5: New USB device found, idVendor=04a9, idProduct=3160
[  580.086787] usb 7-5: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[  580.086787] usb 7-5: Product: Canon Digital Camera
[  580.086787] usb 7-5: Manufacturer: Canon Inc.

My box is FC9 with custom kernel 2.6.25.6.
Is this an udev issue?

No gphoto2 udev rules here.
gphoto 2.4.0-10.
half a year ago the ixus 860 was added to gphoto2.
but it appears my issue is with udev and/or usb detection.

Hmmm..

After a reboot into 2.6.26.2 gphoto2 works!
I successfully retrieved photo material from the camera.
