I can't get a good idea on how development is coming along though. we just dumped firmware so far i think..

Looks like no one is working on it, but soon there will be no more A570 or A720 left and that will probably force people towards the A590. Hopefully one of those people has the skills needed to port CHDK. :)

It really is a wonderful camera considering how cheap it is. When/If it gets a port it will surely be the best bang for the buck camera in that price range.

I had the impression that the 720 was being phased out to boost sales for the 650 on one hand, and the budget models on the others. It's just an impression of course.

Why? The A720 is sold out and discontinued absolutely everywhere, unless you're willing to spend near 50% above MSRP (or hell, more) to get it.

I just got the last one on Crutchfield Outlet for $180, after Adorama couldn't get warranty service on my camera, and could only do a refund. (That's one hell of a tale in itself as well - needless to say, Adorama lost the $5k I am spending on lenses next month.) I am hoping it turns out well - most things sold through the Outlet side of Crutchfield turn out alright :)

All this said, the new Powershot lineup should be announced any day. Historically, this week has been the Powershot announcement week.
Canon P&S: 110HS, SX260HS, SX230HS, 2x A720 IS, 2x A590 IS
Canon DSLR: 5D Mark II, 300D IR-converted, 8x glass
MFT: DMC-GF1, DMC-G3, 7x glass

It's got nothing to do with CHDK; t's got to do with capitalism. The average user gets ahold of a CHDK camera cause his buddy told him how cool it was, and never even finds a use for it. We're a tiny niche... a few thousand geeks. Canon hasn't sent anyone a cease and desist threat, we're small fry.

Simply, Photokina 2008 is coming 09/23.

It's not just the inexpensive units, it's the units there are replacement models for. You got to recover your costs somehow, right? So, you cannot find any S5's or SX100's or G9's either. They are marked as discontinued, and vendors cannot order them even though Canon has tens of thousands of them... what's new about this?

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round...
