I've been trying to figure out how to take a screenshot of my camera's LCD, such as the ones that are on this page: CHDK firmware usage - CHDK Wiki. Here's an example:



I thought that it might be done through Canon's CameraWindow software, but it doesn't work with my Powershot or many others. Do you use the video out and a capture device? Or is there some way to do it over USB? Or do you have to just photograph the LCD using another camera?

As you will have noticed, there is already code in SDM to do that.

However, there are no plans to make it a menu option.

(many of the original CHDK features will be removed from the next SDM releases as they are of little interest to most SDM users).

You will need to apply a palette to the saved bitmap.

CHDKLover posted code in the german forum some months ago, including a windows binary that applys the palette. don't know how i will do it yet, will look into both his code and yours. it will be a debug function of course, and not enabled at default.

My policy in future will be to omit all debugging features .. it simplifies things for people who are easily confused.

If anyone has a problem, I can send them a 'special' version that includes all features.

Most people in this forum would prefer to have all features in the build.

Different folks .. different strokes.

whatever floats ya boat.
you could instead just move all "unneccesary" stuff into a very hard to find menu, maybe just a simple "enable debug mode" entry, which - if enabled - unlocks all the other stuff. i can imagine removing all the stuff will be much work.

will these screenshots be possible using the A/V-out and a composite video in of a Capture-Card?
It is digital - analogue - digital, but anyways much better than taking a photograph of the LC-Screen..

That is really nice. Would you be so kind to point out where in the SDM sources that code can be found?
I had a quick look, but couldn't find anything (probably because of my lacking c-skills ;))

i'm not sure i understand you correctly there, but the screenshot feature will most definitly work like this: press a button -> takes screenshot, load sdcard into PC, see screenshot (run converter on it first).

I meant this:
I am not aware of a screenshot function in CHDK.
SO I thought of the possibility to use the A/V cable of the camera (the one that you can use to show your images on a TV).
This cable you'll connect to an analogue capture card of your computer.
This way you'll be able to get screenshots of your camera without knowing much of the camera's software itself.
