Hi all,

Just came across this site yesterday.  I was extremely excited when I first read about the development.  However, was a tad disappointed to read that my camera isn't supported (yet).  I'm particularly keen on the motion detection scripts for my 5D.  While I'm certainly no programmer please let me know if I can assist with progressing development for the 5D.

In the meantime, is there a body that I can purchase that is compatible with my lenses and the CHDK?

usually camera become supported when two things meat each other - camera and programmer.
due to high price of your camera it is highly impossible to happen.

motion detection works with data which is displayed on live view finder - LCD screen.
It seems 5D have LCD.
does it show live picture on it?

Lets wait.
After succesful completion of something for 40D or 400D it is possible that someone will help you with this.

you can help a litle - check if autoexec.bin file can be loaded  into camera and executed.
I will prepare instructions later.

I don't think there is a body compatible with your lenses and CHDK.
supported cameras are point and shot.

Thanks for the detailed reply.  There is no live picture on the 5D, does this mean that we won't be able to get motion detection to work?  Happy to help where I can (obviously don't want to turn my expensive toy into a paperweight though).   :)

current motion detection function depends on LCD data.
so it will not work because there are no data to work with.

I'm not sure why there are no live picture on 5D - it seems it is not required - optical view finder is better.

can 5D do video? ( ie can it keep sensor open all time?) if yes it is posible to take snapshoots from sensor for motion detection

may be S-series camera will suit you...
I don't think somebody will make something for 5D in near future

It has video out capability (NTSC / PAL).  So I think so.  Sounds like I shouldn't quite give up hope yet.

He means "Can it record video?", video-out is only for picture reviews and a slideshow, right? Anyway, I think the best chance at getting MD to work is to use a 'cheap' CHDK-capable camera for MD and have it trigger your 5D via USB (and CHDK on the 5D) or even via the normal remote shutter release. It shouldn't be too hard to come up with something that can make your 5D trigger on a signal from another camera.

This is probably for reviewing pictures (just the OSD on sent to your TV) which doesn't imply any video capability.

Ah, you are correct, the video out is only for displaying pictures on a TV, etc...

Hmm, sounds like plan B.

So, the idea of using another camera to trip the shutter sounds like a good plan.  In terms of input to the 5D it has both a USB and a remote shutter cable.  Any specifics on how I can use one of these to connect to another camera?

5D like all other eos cameras uses a simple short circuit for cable releasing the camera. The cable release port is a simple 2,5mm stereo plug in 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D and 1000D and a dedicated N3 plug in other cameras.

If you can short circuit the usb via chdk, it's easy to motion trigger an EOS camera using a powershot camera. Some protection electronics will be a wise option, but I don't know much about that.

You should be able to do this with a photodiode and script control of one of the LEDs on the powershot.
