I'd like to get one or 2 SD cards.  What speed do I need?  Is class 6 fast enough?

Strange questions. Depend on what you are plannig to do with them. I have a Sandisk Extreme III (2GB) card, my PC can read/write with 16 mb\s to it, my cam only gets 9-10 out of it, so my guess is the SX100 isnt even able to exhaust the full speed of a "class 6" card. But try it out, i'm interested in it too.

10 Mb\s is fast enough imho, writes RAWs fairly fast, and i can record videos up to quality 95 without problems (though, recording videos with that quality is useless anyways).

As multipartition support was added recently, you could get one of those 8GB SDHC Class 6 Cards, and report how fast the SX100 can write to them - but i doubt it will be faster than 10 mb\s

regards

Class 6 doesn't guarantee that it will be the camera that limits the speed, if that's what you mean. Class 6 means "6 MB/s or better" (I believe), and our cameras can generally do about 10 MB/s.

For example my Class 6 Transcend SDHC card benchmarks at about 8.5 MB/s in the camera while a Sandisk Ultra II is slightly faster, and a Sandisk Extreme III a little bit faster than that.

Oh. well, i thought "Class 6" is just some marketing bullsh*t, that it actually says something about the speed is new to me. Thought the class 6 card were these which are capable of up to 20 mb\s - and i believe even with such a card the SX100 wouldnt write or read faster than 10 mb\s

http://www.sdcard.org/about/speed_class/

"Class 6 Card: A speed of 6 MB/s or higher is guaranteed at the best fragmented state where no memory unit is occupied."

Indeed, some Class 4s are faster than some other Class 6s... o'course really, how many places are actually making SDHC memory cards? Everyone is rebranding someone elses' stuff, much the same with PC power supplies and canned string beans and, well, everything. And just like processors, the ones that don't pass as Class 6 get branded Class 4, likewise "better companies" take Class 6 cards and brand them as Class 4 intentionally, so they look good on paper... THAT is the marketing bullsh*t you're talking about, Hacki. :P

For the SX100? It will only write to the bootable partition which must be FAT16, hence <= 4GB, so the rest of the space on larger cards is wasted. If this issue got solved, can you provide a link?
