I'm really surprised that I'm the only one reporting a problem with the current build (874).  Is it working for everyone else?

All is right with the world, the SD790 is back in beta, the file size of the new DISKBOOT.BIN is 752,729 and works as it should.  I guess I downloaded it before it was ready and when it was noticed, someone corrected the error and never bothered to mention it.  In case anyone else has this problem, download the file again, it now works.

It seems you're mixing up some things ;)
The SD790 was never "outside" beta; the filesize of diskboot.bin is around 246kB, the filesize of the complete (zip) package is around 711kB.
I guess you either tried a wrong CHDK version or something went wrong while downloading...never mind, have fun with CHDK  :)

fe50,

I admire your contributions to this forum and acknowledge I am merely a recipient of your and others hard work, but, I still have the 874 build on my computer that was just labeled full, with no beta designation and the DISKBOOT.BIN that would not boot.  I can send the whole thing to you, if you like.  I'm not mixed up.

Don't forget that the binaries at http://mighty-hoernsche.de/ are automatically generated, so
i suppose if the server is just updating while you are downloading there's always a (very small) chance
that things go wrong ...

have fun,

No big thing, but, usually, when there is an error while downloading, the file size would be smaller, not larger, which is the case here.  Anyway, things are working fine, now that I have the right build, Thanks for everyone's hard work and willingness to share.

I'm so pleased to see this is finally available, and wanted to say thanks for your efforts on our behalf. The 790 has been a great little camera, but the lack of RAW option was making life difficult. I've installed the firmware c version ixus90_sd790-100c-0.9.9-889-full_BETA and  did not have trouble booting -- have only begun to explore the other features, but I was most interested in RAW, and I did experience some difficulties opening the  RAW files. Tried photoshop with canon RAW plugin, the canon DPP software, etc. Tried changing the suffix, thinking that my photoshop could read CR2 better than CRW, but neither opened.  This may be due to the fact that I'm using an older version of Photoshop so cannot use the most recent camera Raw plug in.      Finally I was able to import using  a workaround method and graphic converter on mac, but all RAW file color seems excessively skewed toward cyan (the jpgs are fine). Editing this way is a little awkward ... I  may need to find another program to convert these images.  I tried the DNG converter, but that too, didn't work for me ("not supported on this system").

Thought I'd also mention that  Graphic Converter  EXIF tool 8.16   notes a FILE FORMAT ERROR so I wasn't sure if that is what is keeping the files from opening directly (they are unrecognizable?) and the date is showing as 1970

ExifTool Version Number         : 8.16
Error                           : File format error
---- System ----
File Name                       : CRW_4241.CRW
Directory                       : /Users/name/Desktop/gcfiles
File Size                       : 15 MB
Resource Fork Size              : 734 kB
File Modification Date/Time     : 1970:01:01 00:00:00-05:00
File Permissions                : rw-r--r--

and,
It describes the camera as a  PowerShot SX110 IS.

None of the other EXIF data is displaying
                                   Software : dcraw v8.99
                         File date and time : 1970:01:01 00:00:00
                                     Artist :
                              Exposure time : 0/1000000 s
                                   F number : 0.0
                           ISO speed rating : 0
Lens focal length : 0.0 mm
                              Exposure time : 0/1000000 s
                                   F number : 0.0
                           ISO speed rating : 0
Lens focal length : 0.0 mm

I'm not sure if this is something you are already aware of, but figured I should report it.  I was thinking that it might be good to update the firmware on my camera, then go for another, later version, but when I checked the Canon site, they said no firmware update is available.    So, I guess firmware 100C is what I have and what I'm stuck with.

Will check back periodically, and hope to be able to test some of the other new/interesting features. Thanks again for all your work on this!

EDIT  Just updated to ixus90_sd790-100c-0.9.9-893-full_BETA  and same issue.  Camera is recognized as PowerShot SX110 IS rather than 790 and RAW files on my mac readable only in graphic converter and picassa . Still looking for a workaround to use the raw content effectively - especially 'exposure' modifications , so would appreciate any suggestions as to software that can read these files in 10.4.11.  Will try with 10.5, but would like to get it working with 10.4.

EDIT 2 -- Rawker v 2.3.2  did the trick!  It has an exposure compensation slider that may help as well.  I'm a happy camper now that I can see the RAW files.

just an update, I was finally able to enable DNG -  the script  process had not been working for me but I read instructions for a different camera and followed them to enable the bad pixel script.  I'm happy to report, it opens in photoshop CS2 and gives me the RAW dialog box for exposure/color correction.  Very nice.  I was unsure if we'd have to go through the script enabling each time (when it takes two SLOW pictures) or if there is a way to shoot  DNG naturally, as you are taking pictures in real world situations.  Turned the camera off, and when I restarted, the DNG was still enabled and images were taken in real time, so I guess I did it right!

The color quality is far better on the DNGs than I was getting in the (way too cyan) RAW files and correction is much easier this way because you can use Photoshop.  As you can tell, this is all new to me,  but I'll share my 'experiment" for any other new people struggling to figure this out as I was. The SCRIPTS / TEST / BADPIXEL.LUA  is run by depressing the shutter (I didn't realize that, I was using "set" button and not much was happening except the file name turned yellow.  I also kept getting an error message saying scripts need to be run in "record" mode which was confusing since, to enable CHDK in the first place, you have to be in PLAY mode. I was not certain how to enable the script--   I tried a lot of variations, even video "record" (which was wrong) and eventually got it to work, but can't say exactly how it became enabled. (I moved the switch back to shooting and had selected manual mode)  I guess the main confusion is that I didn't realize the script was going to force two pictures to be taken; had I realized that, I think I would have assumed it had to be in picture taking mode for it to work.  Just didn't quite 'get it' based on the somewhat cryptic "bad pixel" script notes.

When you finally get the script running (shutter depress)  you  need to let it continue  for about a minute, while the camera snaps two pictures.   It tells you to be patient, but it's unclear how long you need to wait.

When it's done press SET and go to RAW PARAMETERS.
Select SAVE RAW and DNG FORMAT.

That got it working.  Will experiment further, since I'm kind of working blindly here, but very encouraged that photoshop (even CS2!) is reading the files.

Again, thanks for all the work on this.  Very cool.

PS Should I be worried that the dead pixel count reported was something like 127,000 ? That seems weird - as no dead pixels are showing up on the screen  and the photos dont seem to be compromised (though DNG seems noisier than JPGs of the same image)  ... I'm guessing it's just part of the hack, but it was a bit of a surprise...   :o

artwire,

My camera is identified as an SD790 when I hold down the set button and press the display button, as instructed in the readme, included with the download.  My camera uses the "GM1.00D" version of the software, dated Jan 24, 2008.  I see you are getting the description of your camera from a picture shot with your camera?  I used Irfanview to read the exif data from one of the pictures I took with my camera.  I just checked in Photoshop CS3 and my camera data shows an SD790 as my camera type.

Try starting the camera by using the top right button on the back of the camera (the view button, rather than the power button) then, hold down the set button and press the display button.  You should then get the real firmware version of your camera as well as two more screens of info about your camera, with each press of the display button, while holding down the set button.

I did start from the view button and confirmed firmware as sd790 version  gm100.c  E18 so all is ok on that score. I was trying to troubleshoot why I couldn't open raw in most applications and thought the EXIF mistake might be contributing to the apps' inability to read the files... but have since moved on to dng and have not looked back. Thanks for the info... I didn't realize you could get two more screens-- the second screen mentions adjusted ver oo7.009  zoom lens error with date 5/9/2010 and the time . Not sure what that means. I think that's approx when I did the firmware update. Should I be worried?  it seems to be zooming ok. Bought camera in April 08 but the software date (I assume) listed is Jan 8, 08. Total shoot says 63 so I'm guessing that's since the chdk as well. I may have missed the documentation on these readings...  I'll have to recheck my download  folder.
