I carry my A570 in my pockets, and it takes really good pictures for a P&S, and it's very cheap. It's not as small as the ELF models, but I think the bulkiness is worth it in terms of money and performance.

Some informations for the SD870...

In the Wikia there are some review links (the DCR review is great !), there are also SD card benchmark results for the SD870, some hints are here: Odd_and_Tricky_cameras.

From the Canon data sheet: 1.3 Continuous-mode frames/second

Works great with SDHC cards, e.g. with 8GB class 6 card you can capture videos with CHDK quality setting up to 96 (VGA, 30fps), very good quality.
With an power-save-optimized timelapse script you can get ~ 1100 pictures in 5.5h with the 1120mAh battery pack.

PS: sorry, zoom is 3.8, not 4  ;)

Yeah I think I'm gonna buy the SD870 when I get paid in 8 days. Now to find the cheapest, whilst still trustworthy, UK retailer...:)

I've found Jessops to be really cheap with most Cannon cameras.
