I'm aware that the ability to take a dark frame without NR has been a top request for some time.  I was wondering if it might be possible to simulate a dark frame using the ND filter.  If that were possible though, there would have to be a way to have a "blacker" ND filter i.e. providing more than three stops of exposure reduction when turned on.

Actually I think we already know how to take dark frames by closing the shutter: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,1365.msg16080.html#msg16080. Just needs to be ported to all cameras and tested, I suppose.

To make an ND filter stop more light than it does now requires dismantling the camera, changing the ND filter and rebuilding the camera (ok, this step will fail miserably). And after that you won't be able to shoot in bright daylight. ::) Not to mention that lots/most CHDK cameras don't have ND filters.

Oh, I was thinking that the ND filter was done electronically.  ::)  However, if we already know how to get the dark frame by closing the shutter, great!  I'll wait patiently for the feature to turn up in the trunk or one of the main branches.

The ND filter on all (?) of the P&S Canons is mechanical, so it's not adjustable, it only swings in / out (mechanicaly), you can hear it "swinging"...
