made in china s5is will not turn on with chdk on card

Hello all. I am new here. I have been reading about the possible problem with the China made S5 cameras (which i unfortunately have). Apparently, the older ones were made in japan and can work with the chdk. I don't think i did anything wrong, the diskboot and ver.req is on the card, unzipped the s5 file to the card and had followed all instructions. I put the card in the cam and nothing will turn on. It is as if the cam has no batteries. I have an old s3 in storage. Maybe I should go dig it out ? I need the raw function ! The s5 focuses much faster though and is a shame it seems as if I can't use it. I have a shoot on Friday with difficult lighting and am hopeful for any much needed advice. Thank You, Robert
 :(

I had purchased the s5 at office depot, by the way.  Just got my s3 out of storage and checked the bottom. I had purchased the s3 from Staples. It was made in Japan. Going to try the chdk now. I encourage those that have a china made canon "consider" going to small claims court to sue canon for their money back. I still have the s5 box. I wonder what it says on it.

So - let's check first:

a) Do you have a CHDK compatible version. What does your cam report ?

b) Are you sure you properly made your card bootable ? Even if you did,
is it a new card to you ? Some cards will just absolutely refuse to be
made bootable, they block access to 1st sector. To check out card,
I would advise testing it's functionality in your s3is first - assuming
you have CHDK experience with it.

hi whim.
Thank you for your help.
I tried both versions of the s5 software and neither worked. The camera would do absolutely nothing. As if no batteries were in it.
I tried downloading the software for the s3 on the same card and now my s3 indicates the firmware (s3) is there. So I guess it wasn't the card. I guess.
Since I don't have experience with chdk with the s3is (I really should have - shame on me) I don't know where the ALT button is on it which is one of the necessary steps.
Please let me know.
Thank you,
Robert

To more specifically answer your question, Whim, the camera reported nothing. Screen was totally black. I believe I did download the s5 software properly since I did the same "thing" with the s3.
Do you think I shoud try the s5 download with a different san disk card even though the card was okay with the s3? Is it possible the s5 needs a sector that the s3 doesn't in the programming ?
thank you,
robert

I would let you know, but have neither s3is nor s5is myself.

There's always the Wiki though: FAQ - CHDK Wiki

wim

about your later post:

no, a card that works with s3 should work with s5 - the first sector needs to have a signature that works for
all cams.

thank you whim.
the s3 chdk software is working on the s3 with the same card. I can now shoot in raw !!!! Yes !!!!
I found the alt button, it is the S button. The Go button or Record is turning the top on off button on the right hand side of the cam to the left.
And the moral of the story is............. Don't buy anything from China. Not even a Canon S 5. Uh oh. What about the successor ! I do feel that those who have a china s5 have legal grounds since buying a japanese camera is like buying a german car. Part of the reason  you buy it is because of the country of origin and its reputation with a particular product/s.

I betcha 95% of the parts of German cars are also made in China - you'll be lucky if
they mounted the steering wheel in Germany   :D

BTW Did you get your S5 to report its version yet ? It should look sth like this:
Quote
Canon PowerShot S5 IS
P-ID:3148  NT D

Firmware Ver GM1.01A
No error
May 29 2007    18:17:20

If you do please post it in the form above, than we can see if there really is such a
thing as a special China edition... me personally, I doubt it.

hi whim.
on the bottom of the camera, It says CANON INC. MADE IN CHINA. I will try the firmware info. shortly. I tried downloading both versions of the s5 chdk to the card and installing it in the cam and the camera cannot be turned on. Put in another mem card and it turns on immediately.
