Good find PhyrePhoX.

If only I could program. How hard would it be for the CHDK gurus to develop a CHDK version. I could prototype the electronics interface.

Introduction to Nintendo DS Programming | Patater

From the site:
This is the great and holy Introduction to Nintendo DS manual, the supreme source for beginner knowledge on programming the Nintendo DS.

This manual covers topics including the legality of homebrew and the politics behind it, displaying backgrounds on both screens, sprites, and a bit of game mechanics.

Version 6.0 - This manual now covers additional aspects of Nintendo DS Programming including multiple sprites, multiple backgrounds, multiple palettes, the touch screen, Slot-1 devices, and more. The manual's case study has undergone a significant rewrite and covers more ground than ever before.

The Manual download with Source Code is available on the site.
The SDK download referred to in PhyrePhox's post is at:
Setting Up

I am starting to get excited; time to stop.

Try this site, it contains technical and programming information on the Gameboy and Gameboy advance consoles. There is a lot of programming information which I understand may be relevant to the Nintendo DS.

Jeff Frohwein's Software/Hardware Dev'rs

It is an old site with a lot of dead links. The information by the site owner is quite interesting. You may be able to pick up a second-hand Gameboy for next to nothing. I have second-hand one that was given to me, unfortunately I am useless at programming.

I found some old information about a guy who used a Gameboy for a KAP pan and tilt controller. Unfortunately the technical information has disappeared

The above link has some port mapping software available. Maybe it may be of use to the creative programmers on the forum.
