Hello everybody!

I am new to this stuff, i mean the CHDK thingy.
I am looking for a robust camera that i could use for timelapse recording of either 1h or 12h or 24h sequences. Wideangle would be nice and low ISO.
Btw, how does this software work? I am not familiar with computer or software programming. Is it possible to install this software on the Powershot S60-S70-S80 series and how is the installation done?

All you want to know is written somewhere in this board. (Or here: CHDK - CHDK Wiki)

So, would you mind putting a little effort into searching such information for yourself, before starting to ask questions which had been asked a dozen times before..?

Sorry, but we get such a thread like every week here...

If you're not familiar with software programming or computers at all, its kindof pointless to explain how chdk works in detail..

But to not look like a total smartass, here, have some useful links:

btw, i doubt that you will get anything over 12h running time without an external power supply..

Is there any basic Canon Powershot cam that could get power from other than the normal AA-sized batteries/rechargeables (connect to the powergrid ??)?
I need a camera for shooting that i cant be supervising for sometimes over 12h for timelapse recording to a big memorycard or via USB to my MAC/extHD.

As far as i know, every Powershot/Ixus camera has a special AC-adapter. And most new models support SDHC cards, which supports capacitys up to 32 GB (But be careful, CHDK cant 'autoboot' from SDHC cards, so you either need a camera with VxWorks so you can use manual loading, or you need a camera which supports multiple partition booting)

But lets just say, the SX100 1.00c is a camera which could provide what you need. Its a dryos cam, but it supports multipartitions (dont know about version 1.00b), its a little bulky, but if you intend to use it for timelapse movies, that probably wont hurt..  Its the cam i use, and i like it..

Still.. you can basically use any camera which is supported by chdk, as there are power supplies for all cams, and even those which dont support multipartitions and manual loading can have space of up to 4 GB  - enough for like a thousand 9mpix shots, and a LOT more in lower resolutions (which you would probably choose, as a timelapse video in 3264x2448 is pretty much pointless and way too big)

Ok, i will look into this cam. All i would need is a basic cam with decent lens (i suppose i maybe can make alla manual selections in CHDK, still new to me) for timelapse movies of about 1pic/min or 1pic/5-10mins for 4 weeks on small resolution (like 1280X800 or alike) from same spot with automatic exposure and focus set to infinate, theres where the AC-adapter comes in and because of the amount of pictures to be taken the download thru a always connected laptop/HD would be important. I can check the equipment  by daily basis, but it would be stationed for the mentioned 4 weeks.

You cant connect a HDD to a camera. Even with CHDK, its not possible to write to an external HDD, as that would require some drivers which are too big for the camera. Someone managed to get chdk running on an eye-fi card, though. Its a wireless SD card, with which you can transfer the images to a PC, and let chdk delete them from the card, so you can (theoretically) take an infinite number of photos.

Just use the board search function with the term "eye-fi", there are several threads about that topic.

The second product lists 14.4Wh, which at 3.7V give about 4Ah
Considering that good Nimh batteries are rated 2.5 Ah, the advantage in using that device isn't that dramatic.

There is possibility to use AC if i can find a camera that can be used with an optional AC-adapter. Also i can use for example 2x16GD SD cards by just changing the cards and empty them. I did not mean that i'd connect an external HD but if possibility to have a USB from Camera to my Macbook which would serve as an external HD until i can get home and transfer the pics to a different disk.
So as mentioned before, is there any Powershot model that can be connected to an AC-adapter and also connected with USB for realtime or periodical download to my macbook.

Btw, the position of the cam would bu static, ie. not changing.

There are AC adapters for all powershot cameras. I said that already. If you intend to do such a big project, why dont you put any effort yourself into it? go to canon.com and have a look there about additional supplies..


You cant connect them to a USB port while taking pictures though, as long as CHDK doesnt take control over the USB signal, the camera will go to review mode automatically.. But i suppose it should be possible to let chdk enable & disable the USB stuff, so the cam does to review mode periodically.. All you need to do then is set up your computer so that it downloads and deletes the pictures as soon as a camera is detected..
