I have used DNG For Powershot 1.1.4 to convert my CRW files from my A560 (using Allbest CHDK 37) to DNG

Thanks for the contribution but that's not the problem i'm having.

The issue is that when I connect my camera to my PC to get my files off, Windows will only sometimes display the CRW files, but most times it won't (JPEGs will show up just fine, every time).  In cases where it doesn't show my raw files i'll have to take the memory card out, pop it into my card reader, and take them off that way.  It's just a hassle having to do that every single time and i'm paranoid about wearing the battery cover out.

A cheap, USB multi-card reader will eliminate this problem. Just drag and drop the files from the drive your card is in to a folder you created in windows explorer and you're all set. I've seen the light and have stopped connecting my camera to the computer altogether.

generally i access my camera via windows explorer... when i plug in camera it appears under my computer...
 i can download jpegs and raws too

I have just purchased a Canon G9 wanting to fly it from my balloon.

I was going to use CHDK but thought it looked real tricky and i did not understand it all as im new to it.

Found a device to remote trigger the G9 @
   Blip.com.au R/C Aerial Photography & Accessories
 which due to the camera being triggered by USB means i cannot seem to shoot RAW at the same time.

If i purchased a card reader would this solve the problem on the G9 also?

RE: getting RAW off the camera through the USB cable -- I've found on OS X that although Canon's "CameraWindow" (the OS X answer to ZoomBrowser?) can't see the RAW files, if I instead use Apple's builtin Image Capture utility it can see them and download and delete them just fine.

So there is hope -- "generic" download-stuff-from-camera-through-USB utilities will probably take care of you.  It's just Canon's own stuff that doesn't see CRWs.

eheil - Windows also uses Camera Window. Zoombrowser deals with pics that are already on the computer

I tried setting RAW pics to be named with a jpg extension, but I still can't transfer or even see them when the camera is attached to the PC through USB. I also tried moving them to the misc folder with the CHDK filebrowser.

Does anyone know how the camera's OS decide what to show and hide from the USB connection? I checked the attributes if the RAW and jpg files - they are the same. Maybe JPEG are logged in a database when pics are taken?
