The average battery life CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) values for the A590 are
- 200 shoots with AA Alkaline Batteries
- 450 shots with AA NiMH Rechargeable Batteries
I was getting ~270 shots per pair of alkaline cells before using CHDK. New 2650mAH NiMH cells were very disappointing but it was after their first charge, so I'll reserve judgement for now until they've had a few cycles.
I'll have to start a battery diary as I've forgotten picture numbers -- batteries don't last near as long with CHDK fitted, but as the FAQ on battery life stated, I've spent much time in the CHDK menu in record mode... Also been taking many five-shot exposure bracketing (2/3 step) sequences for HDR, that would suck battery life too.
I have IS set to 'shoot only', rarely take flash photos, and haven't been taking much other trouble to minimise battery usage. Alkalines are Rayovac brand from USA (bulk pack 48 for AU$20) and NiMH are Duracell, made in Japan, with a Duracell smart 4 cell 3 hour charger.
Other point is that now I have the CHDK battery voltage display I can now take the alkaline batteries way further, so some dozen or two shots and much CHDK menu time (perhaps an hour or more) was with the red lobatt symbol flashing. I think the camera shutdown when the voltage fell to about 2.2V on alkalines.
