@mngc

You don't have to zoom to minimum anymore. And also you don't have to turn the Digital Zoom on from the camera menu.

Ver. 1 firmware (only diskboot.bin)

- Camera no crash in video mode
- optical zoom working, when zoom ring set to one level lower and zoom to higher value
 (without zoom ring set to one level lower, and zoom to higher value, optical zoom not work, only digital)
- mute mic selectable, not working, noisy wideo
- af key, working
- bitrate, quality, selectable, not working

Ver. 2 firmware (only diskboot.bin)

same as Ver. 1 firmware

Ver. 3 firmware (only diskboot.bin)

Great news!
- Camera no crash in video mode
- optical zoom working!, no need zoom ring trick. Digital zoom work too.
- mute mic now working!
- af key, working
- bitrate, quality, selectable, not working

This comment not understand. Old version have a digital zoom problem?

@mngc / DreamOn / dvip
all your results are as I hoped.

I will post another test version tonight,
it will need a lot of testing (bitrate / quality etc.) and the results will depend on the write speed of your memory card.

Let's hope it all works for you.

I was saying that in the old versions of CHDK you had to enable the Digital Zoom from the camera menu in order to use the optical zoom when recording. This is not necessary anymore, which is a good thing.

Oh alright, if you can't wait .... :D
Here is the final test version.
This should have the same Optical Zoom, Mic Mute available as well as Video Quality and Bitrate adjustment.

This will need a FULL test (I don't want to break anything that is working now).

If all is well I can do the same updates to the 100 E firmware version then produce a patch for inclusion in the trunk.

Good luck,

Optical zoom, mic mute and video bitrate all working. I get an average of 3200 - 3400 Kb/s when using the 3x setting, around 2500 kb at 2x, and around 1100 kb at the 1x setting so I guess it's working. The Video Quality mode is not working properly for me though. If i set quality to 99 camera crashes as soon as I start to record. 98,97,96 quality modes crash when i zoom while recording. 95 seems to be stable. I'm using a Panasonic class 4 SD 2GB card so maybe that's why. As far as the video quality goes I can't say that I see any changes in my movies.

@DreamOn,
thanks for the input.
I don't think it should "crash" when the quality is too high for the card / camera,
I think it should show a warning mark (!) on the screen then stop recording, but not crash.

The diferrence in quality is hard to see, you can see a very low quality setting (20) but I don't see any change at the high settings.

Well  when I use the 99 quality setting, the camera shuts down. Screen goes black and it won't retract the lens. There's no warning mark either.
The difference is indeed hard to see at the high quality settings but I don't mind really, it's quite satisfying as it is.

@DreamOn,
well it sounds like we are close, but no prize.
I don't think a crash at high quality setting is acceptable.
A crash should never happen with any setting combinations that are possible.

I will take another look at the table values.
Thanks for all the help with the testing, it is almost imposible to develop for a camera you don't have in your hands.

If I get anywhere I'll let post my results, in the mean time can you and any others keep trying the current test version to find any other problems.
Thanks
