Wow. Getting nowhere fast. Very frustrating. Just want to take pictures.

1. Not the card. CardTricks performed EXACTLY the same way with a new SanDisk Ultra II 2GB as it did with the first card. Conclude, it's not the card.

2. Tried as Hacki suggests to: "Open the SD card directly with a hex editor and see if the BOOTDISK flag is at offset 0x40."
---  On Windows ME machine, couldn't get HDHacker to run..."HDHacker requires Administrator's Privileges to Start".  (but no admin in ME)

--- On Mac tried to use hexedit in terminal window as suggested here: Getting CHDK working on the Canon S5 IS from Mac OS X | B. Mann Consulting (following instructions to use macports), but hexedit does not execute.

--- Also on Mac tried suggestion here: Bootable SD card - CHDK Wiki:, which says to execute: :sudo newfs_msdos -F 16 -v SX100IS -O -b 4096 -c 128 /dev/disk2s1" in terminal mode. Substituted "A590IS" for "SV100IS" and used correct diskxxx, but to no avail.

Any suggestions welcome

Try the sdminste.exe which comes with the StereoData Maker (SDM) version.

Perhaps something just not right with this old Win ME PC?
 sdminste.exe for  doesn't run properly either;
--- The Select SD card drive window is blank (no drives shown)
--- The "Make Bootable Disk" and "Format" buttons do nothing
--- The "Copy SDM to SD Card" button brings up window saying: "Z:\ refers to a location that is unavailable..." (this is with f: -- the card reader -- entered into the drive window)

Maybe someone can suggest CHDK installation help for a Mac...

For 4GB SD card, I partioned to 2 parts with Mac disk utility, copied (drag & drop CHDK files on Part1, (FAT16 16MB partition, other partition is 3.9GB FAT32), then "made bootable" with "Cardtricks" on the PC. Then checked,  it worked OK, showed 1181 shots left to take.

This is discussed elsewhere also, but I'm posting hoping you may get a clue from what I did. You'll see I used Cardtricks, that's because I was getting nowhere trying to make bootable on the Mac, but others have.
A720IS.

So, to summarize my predicament so far...
--- Can't make a bootable card on the Mac
--- Can't make a bootable card on a PC running Win ME (actually two different but identical Compac Presario's) using either CardTricks or sdminste.exe with StereoData Maker.

It would seem that the next move would be to get on a PC with XP or Vista. Or, does anyone else have ideas for the Mac?

If you correctly follow the instructions on Bootable SD card - CHDK Wiki you can make the card bootable on Mac, assuming there's nothing wrong with your card or card reader.

Instead of randomly trying different methods, you need to figure out what you are doing wrong.

You said above:

If you don't specify how those failed, it is impossible for us to tell you what you are doing wrong. Of course, if you have access to an XP or vista PC, it may be simpler just to try cardtricks on that.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Success at last!

I was able to make a bootable card using OxED on the Mac to modify its boot sector, then put CHDK on the card using CardTricks on the PC.

Thank you to all that took the time to respond to my requests for help.
