What is the best way to clean up a card after filling it and downloading the images and vids?

Since the instructions say to move the write lock to locked, I've been doing the following:  Take my pictures, take card out and put in slot in computer and download files.  Take card out, move switch to unlock the card, put back in computer and delete the image files, take out, lock card and put in camera.

Is this the right way to proceed?

TIA,
Brandon

If you unlock the card after taking out of your cam and before putting it in the slot, you will save 1 lock-unlock
cycle, which should give the tiny plastic thingy a longer life ...
Or use (in cam with CHDK)  Miscellaneous Stuff -> File Browser to delete files. see page 50 in the user guide
(link in my signature) -- then you can leave the lock on.
The reason ? The lock on an SD card is not 'hard', it's up to the controlling software to check if it's on, so CHDK
just prevents the reader in the cam from checking it.

hope that helps,

Many cheap card readers ignore the lock completely. I use this one Newegg.com - Link Depot PD-SDMMC 4-in-1 USB 2.0 Card Reader/Adapter - Card Readers for example. I've seen many similar ones on ebay and the direct-from-china gadget sellers like dealextereme. Of course, most of them don't tell you anywhere whether write protect works or not, so it's a bit of a gamble.
Don't forget what the H stands for.
