Hi guys,
I'm wondering fi CHDK could help me use my A3300 IS as a web camera on Linux ? It doesn't appear to be so for the moment. I've loaded CHDK to the camera and see all the remote control settings but that doesn't seem related to my use case.

Do I need an additional driver for other apps to recognize the A3300 IS as a camera device ?

Has anyone managed to make use of their Canon cameras (regardless of model) as web cams on Linux?

This is correct, the "usb remote" setting are for a DIY remote shutter release, not USB remote control or display.

The CHDK PTP extension http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/PTP_Extension does let you control the camera over USB, and using the chdkptp client https://www.assembla.com/spaces/chdkptp/wiki you can view the camera display over USB. However, it will not act as a webcam in the sense that other software will recognize it as a webcam device.
It should be relatively simple to write glue to send chdkptp output to something like a modified video4linux loopback driver, but so far no one has done it.
