CHDK and card speed.

I have a question that I haven't found a an answer to on the forum.  I realize the best way to use CHDK is probably to have a separate memory card, but when I use my SD1100is, i prefer to travel light.  In the manual for my camera, it is stated that to insure the greatest speed using continuous mode, and the maximum movie length, I should use a high speed card that has a low level format.  I have done that.  My question is, does the process of formatting the card using cardtricks, and placing CHDK on the memory card, affect the speed of the card when NOT using CHDK.  So, if I wanted to alternately use and not use CHDK (by altering the position of the lock switch) do I lose any continuous or movie capability when CHDK is off?

does the weight of an extra card make a difference ?  :-)

On a more serious tone, having CHDK on your card won't make if slower.

Fragmentation is an issue when (for example) you shoot 1000 pictures and then you delete every second picture.... Doing this the free space on your card is all divided in pieces (fragmented) and write sepped might decrease.

if you really want to be sure, format the card, and then install chdk. this will ensure that all free spaces is in a single lump, after the chdk files.

I would say that rather than worrying about chdk files the thing you should reall avoid it to always selectively delete photos (in the long run, that's the largest cause for fragmentation), and sometimes delete all photos on your card, so that all the fragments are re-united in a llarge chunk.

Almost any price-quality balanced SD cards can support the preferred minimum write speed (around 4-6 MB/sec), even it's fragmented a little bit (but it's recommended to erase all image files sometime).
You can buy high speed cards, but i recommend it only if you shoot raws, in other cases i don't think that makes any difference...
