Help for noob with SD700is?

hello, maybe someone here can help me, maybe not.

quite simply, i can't to get CHDK to work. i've tried both direct copy-to-card and CardTricks and get nada.

i also can't even pull up my current firmware version. what am i doing wrong?

i've got a Canon Powershot SD700is.
i'm using a 2G Sansa card formatted FAT.
I've downloaded CHDK-ixus800_sd700-101b-0.5.5-527 from http://grandag.nm.ru/hdk/autobuild/download.htm.

when i copy the files to the root, i get the firmware update option in the menu, but after selecting it, there is no difference (no splash, no change in options, nothing different).
when i use CardTricks i lock the card like it says to, but then the camera won't even power up (however it will power up when using a card that is locked but has NOT been copied to by CardTricks.)

as to even finding the OEM firmware version, doing the "SET / Disp" yields no results, and the Canon FAQ says to plug in via USB and a GUI with the info will pop up, but again ~ no.

yes, i've read The Guide For Dummies. no help for me.

any clues? anything? i mainly just want to get around the 1G file limit. if there is another work around for that specifically, i'll be a happy camper.

any help is appreciated, TIA.

Well, even if the 'ver.req' Func.Set+Display doesn't work, you could still try the other 2 versions of the
firmware available for ixus800_sd700, 100B and 101A. Nothing will work unless you get the version
of CHDK appropiate for your cam

this page SD800IS - CHDK Wiki seems to indicate that it should work though ...

excellent advice! worked backwards and got 100B to work (still can't pull up the OEM firmware version, though.)
i said i was a noob at this. i'm so used to grabbing the latest releases for PC progs that it never occured to me to work down. thanks for the heads-up.

do you mean you still can't get the cam to show the version ?

PS glad to hear you got CHDK to work, have fun !

correct, the OEM firmware version doesn't seem to be available to me, at least not that i can find. also, when in CHDK mode(?), i can't pull up any menus aside from the Canon default options, though CHDK seems to be loading. i do get the splash and icon mods, plus a few basic commands (light histogram, zebra).

AND... my primary goal of circumventing the 1G limit is snafu'd by (apparently) a one hour video recording limitation, even though at 320x240 @ 15fps it has the capacity for 86min of recording (2G card).
this only gains me 4 minutes or so over the 1G limitation using the same video settings.
SO, where i'm at now even if there is a work-around script for the 1 hour vid problem, i wouldn't be able to load it 'cause i can't pull up the CHDK menu (?).

just realized i forgot to mention that grand's autobuild site is no longer updated (not recently, at least)
Go to Hacki's autobuild site CHDK Download - build 0.8.2, revision #591 to get latest versions (591 ATM)
Don't know if that would help with your video problem though - i prefer a dedicated videocam.

Hey! that one worked ( ixus800_sd700-100b-0.8.3-593-full )!
Thank you! i can access everything now!

though i still can't get around the 1 hour vid limit, at least now i can increase the vid quality for the time allowed.

yeah, i'd prefer a dedicated videocam also, but being on a wee budget the Canon is my only means for taking digital video (i've a analog handycam, but no analog video input card on my computer).

before i begin to delve into the whole script writing thing, perhaps you or someone else here would know offhand whether a work-around is even possible? if not, no worries. you've been a big help and i do appreciate your time and patience. thank you.

cheers!

increase the vid quality for the time allowed

Be carefull though not to crank it up higher than your SD card writing can handle;
also be aware that max writing speed decreases as the card fills up.

have fun,

wim
