hey that was a quick reply - thanks for the input.

I read that S5IS has firmware version GM1.00b  (some units I heard has GM.100A).   But SX10 uses DIGIC 4 (vs S5IS'  DIGIC 3) so it seems like there would be lots of work for this CHDK version.  Too bad I dont code assembler nor C (does Cobol count? j/k!!)

The firmware version numbers don't indicate similarity across camera models as far as I know. That is, GM1.00b on one model isn't necessarily related to GM1.00b on another.

Each model/firmware rev requires it's own CHDK port (except in some rare cases where different firmware revisions of a given model are minor enough that they don't require a new CHDK version)

Some models are more closely related to each other than others, both due to hardware similarity or software re-use, but the version string doesn't tell you this.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

@Gran Canaria

If you're on Windows, try CardTricks (link in my signature)
use the 'NewDryOS' option, this has worked for me on ixus870_sd880,
which is also DIGIC 4.

I used the newest cardtrick 1.41 to see if there is a difference.
no screen flickers on
the dump is 10,176k
the cleaning cleans just the leading 00
the PRIMARY_cam-firm.bin is 8,127k

so here is that SX10 dump also

It looks like GM1.01A is for PAL version. Mine is "NT"sc

Mine shows

Canon Poweshot SX10 IS
P-ID:318-D NT D

Firnware  Ver GM1.00C
No Error
Sep 14 2008 14:57:56

when I hit Func set + Disp (clicking Disp twice) it shows:

Adj Ver: 019.007

when I click DISP yet again while holding down the Func Set button:

Total Shoot: xxx
Zoom Retry Count: 0
Mecha Condition: 0X0000000

Am still figuring how to capture the dump
