what's up after IMG_xxxx is over 9999
« Reply #12 on: 11 / January / 2008, 14:27:34 »
[I just reached the 9000 mark, and till now enjoyed, that every picture has a specific number.
I'm frightend of loosing this for me very helpful feature when taking more than  9999 shots.]

What's up with the file names after you've shot more than 9999 pictures? Any experiences?

Thanks in advance.

What's up with the file names after you've shot more than 9999 pictures? Any experiences?

They start again with IMG_0001.JPG - so you will get pictures with the same filename.

But - and this is the good news - there is a field in the EXIF-Data ("Image Number") which is a 7-digit number
of the format xyyzzzz.
zzzz - is the same number as in the file name
x - is shows you how often you passed the img_9999
yy - is always the first 2 digits from zzzz (don't understand that)

And now an example. First image in camera has the filename IMG_0001.jpg and EXIF-Data 1000001
Now you shot 10000 images and you get another image with IMG_0001.jpg but Exif-Data 2000001

thanks, quite useful, when reaching that I'll perhaps write a small program that transforms the newer pictures into IMG_xxxxx or just IMG_number.

Thanks to the answer on the next page.
(I don't reply to not push the thread again uselessly.)

or just IMG_number.
you don't need a self-written program for this - Irfan View's batch rename can do that

My A710 saves something like: xyyzzzz,
but it is
x always 1
yy is 00 and after 10000 it is 01 and zzzz is the image number!

Answer to next post:
Seems that the internal memory of the camera is reset, if a few days without batteries, even if there is enough power
in the small cell next to the main power source.
I sure had shot about 60 images when I tried to remove this smaller cell and the counter was reset.
But these were the first one's, so only test images.

I have tried many time to get the original firmware version on my S5IS, S2IS and A570IS. All I get is the 1.0.1.0. Ihave tired most ways to make the ver.reg/VER.REG/vers.reg/VERS.reg empty file. I've used diferent size SD cards (64mb-2gb). Please tell me where I'm doing it wrong!

It's not a question, it's the solution. :)

The procedure is the same as for "How can I get the original firmware version number of my camera?".
But you have to put 'vers.req instead of 'ver.req' to your SD-card.
So,
  • Create a file called vers.req in the root directory of your SD-card
  • Switch on the camera in playback mode (don't switch on in rec mode and change to playback later)
  • Press the [set]+[disp.] buttons together (press [set] first, hold it down, then press [disp.])
  • Do not release [set] button and press [disp.] again and ones more.
You will see "Total shoot:" string.

Be noticed that, unfortunately, not all models support this functionality (unlike for 'ver.req').
From dumps I have, the following cameras can report total shots:
A540, A550, A560, A570, A610, A620, A630, A640, A700, A710, A720 (it seems whole A-series can);
S3IS, S5IS;
S80;
G7;
SD430, SD630, SD700, SD1000.

And for the following cameras seems there is no support of total shots reporting:
S2IS;
SD300, SD400, SD500.

For other models it's unknown because I do not have the dumps for them. But it seems that all recent and new cameras have such functionality.
