question about SD-1000 and dual partitions on 16GB card:

i don't want to use SDM, i just want a ability to run scripts on my camera with CHDK autoboot. does SDMINSTE do something special to make camera able to see both partitions?  if so, can i take advantage of that using Allbest or whatever, i.e. without using SDM?

Try The collaborative CHDK build / Juciphox branch -  actual CHDK, which support SDHC card!
+ see my post one above

It should help, SDMINSTE was good middle-step.

So after reading through this entire thread I'm still not clear if the hack for dual partitions on an 8GB SDHC works on an A650.  Has anyone done this yet?

hi folks,

i'm using canon s3 + kingmax 16g sdhc and CHDK-s3is-100a-0.2.6-473 version. I read, this version is support sdhc. I can do the 'firm update' and after chdk load, i make my card bootable, but after a restart, chdk can't autoload. When i turn on write protect, the camera writes on start, that 'card is not writeable'.

i make something wrong, or (nowdays) the only way to autoboot with chdk and sdhc is 2 partitions?

thanks, kuf

Short answer: CHDK can only boot from FAT 16 partitions, and the absolute maximum size of a
FAT16 partition is 4 GB. So, if you want to boot off any card > 4 GB, you need to partition.
If you want more detail, please read this entire topic.

I tried what wind said, but aefdisk32 when i click the EXE it launch a windows and just close it after...

That's because it's a command line program, can't avoid reading the manual for those ...
typically, this type of program will just complain that you passed no parameters to them,
and then quit (when double-clicked). It's better to start them in a 'cmd window', here's how:

Go Start menu -> Run

type: "cmd /k {full path to aefdisk here}"  (don't type the quotes)

example "cmd /k c:\aefdisk\aefdisk32.exe"  (don't type the quotes)

the '/k' stands for 'keep' and makes sure the 'cmd window' stays open after the program quits.

now 'all' you need to do is figure out the parameters to pass to aefdisk, which, as I said, is
a question of manual reading. Take care, by the way, this kind of programs can wipe harddisks
before you can shout 'help'  :haha

hope that helps,

wim

That's because of your working directory.

type (in the case of your example) at the prompt "D:\aefdisk32v13rc1\aefdisk32 1 /show"

and it should work. To have it work without typing the path every time, you need to change
the working diectory (= what's normally shown before the '>' prompt)
You should be able to get that done with a little read-up on the windows command line,
there's plenty material on the web, here's an example:

have fun,
